Sorrento to Montepulciano- where to rent car?

Sorrento to Montepulciano- where to rent car?
My husband and I will be traveling to Italy in May. It is his 1st time, my 2nd but never dealt w/car rental before. I would love some help on how best to get from Sorrento to Montepulciano via car rental. Should we take a train into Naples and drive from there? Or train to Rome instead? I heard driving in room is crazy so hoping to avoid that if possible. Can I even take a train into Orvietto or one of the other towns in Umbria and pick up a car there?
Afterwards I will be heading out from Tuscany to Cinque Terre so if you can also let me know where I should drop off the car. Thinking most likely be in Florence. If you can let me know what my options are I would greatly appreciate input. Grazie!

The drive out of Sorrento and north is fairly easy; the difficult, winding roads are south of Sorrento. You'll mostly be on the Autostrada. There's a Hertz in Sorrento. Not sure about other auto rental agencies.
If you're going to end up in Cinque Terre, Florence seems like a likely spot to drop the car, but you might also want to look into whether Pisa is a possibility for that, as you'll be able to get the train from there to CT.

Trains are faster and you can easily change at Rome for a regional train to Chiusi- lots of car rentals near station and a short drive from Multepulciano - Orvieto could be neat too but not sure about car rentals. Book train tickets far in advance to get discounted tickets - www.trenitalia.com - for lots of info on Italian trains check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Drop car in Pisa to avoid hassle of Florence or at Florence Airport - can't drive in much of central Florence though some car rentals are outside the no-drive zone.

Going in the opposite direction, we drove south from Umbria on the Autostrada, dropped our rental car off at Naples airport and then stayed in Naples. Easy. The drive was very easy, much easier than dealing with Rome, and trains. The autostrada went west of Rome. From Naples, took ferry to Capri, stayed, ferry to Sorrento where we stayed, driver back to Naples airport for a flight out of Italy.

Thanks so much for all your input. It is much appreciated! We might consider taking a car from Sorrento if it is faster/easier. I hadn't thought about that. We'll look into train times vs driving times with the info you provided. Happy Holidays to all of you!

I agree. Also, if you drive, you deal with luggage only at your departure and arrival points. But if you train from Sorrento to Orvieto/Chiusi, you get on and off at least two trains, and the metro from Sorrento to Naples can be very crowded. Driving also gives you the option of making a stop or two at interesting points along the way, like the palace at Caserta and/or the villa and gardens at Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa.

Yes for Orvieto or Chiusi trains would be slower than driving as those are slow regional trains that stop all the time - the fast train Naples to Rome would be faster than driving but that really slow CircumVesuviana train Sorrento to Naples moves at a snail's pace. And changing trains is a pain, especially with luggage.
I agree better off driving - now if going to Florence from Amalfi trains may be faster - Naples to Florence at about 160 mph.
Hadrian's Villa would be another potential stopping place en route to Tuscany.
