Sorrento Questions
 

We'll be in Sorrento for 3 nights in June, staying at the Excelsior Vittoria. Thinking of taking a boat trip one day, but can't decide between Capri and Amalfi coast. After watching Giada De Laurentiis in Capri the other night, I'm now leaning there. We'd also like to snorkel if possible. Suggestions? Also, need advice for where to eat lunch/dinner during our time there. We have 13 year old boy/girl twins. We could do one or two fancy dinners, but casual (great pizza, seafood) also good.

You could go to both the Amalfi Coast - Positano and boat to Capri.

If you are staying in Sorrento there is a SITA bus that leave from the train station down the coast stopping in both Amalfi and Positano.

The boat from Sorrento's harbor to Capri leaves all day long.

If you are there for 3 days you could spend one day shopping in Sorrento and walking around there.

Everything is relaxing and easy to do.

I'm worried about a bus to Positano because my daughter gets car sick on winding roads, however boats are no problem.

What are the prices for day boats? How many people do they take? Do they stop for swimming/snorkeling?

I would direct your questions about day boats and snorkeling to the concierge at the Excelsior Vittoria. This is the type of assistance you're paying for at this high-end hotel. The hotel can also help with restaurant recommendations, although I have to say we had no trouble finding nice moderately-priced options on our own.

If you want to see either the AC Coastal towns or Capri without the hired boat, you can take ferries to many towns and Capri. The hotel can give you the ferry schedules, or you can find them at www.sorrentomap.com.

I think you're correct to worry about your daughter's car sickness. My husband has trouble on the SITA bus even if we sit in the first row.

Hi, Jean, I've emailed the hotel and we'll see what they suggest. I believe the hotel has its own boat, but that probably costs more than an independent.

What's the road like going to Salerno? My husband's ancestral home is there, but we're not sure it's worth taking a look.

An alternative are the MN 'Marine Club' cruises (- approx € 30) from Sorrento to Capri/Positano/Amalfi - which have swim stops en route.

It's the most spectacular coastal road in Europe :)

But for anyone suffering from travel sickness it's a potential nightmare ...

Alternatively from Sorrento you can take the hydrofoil to Salerno - or drive via Pompeii.

The Vittoria has a private lift to the harbour so taking boat trips is your easier option. Avoid buses if anyone suffers from travel sickness. There are many good restaurants within walking distance of your hotel. I would dine out as the food in the Vittoria was not very good. We have stayed there many times.

La Lanterna, Pizzeria Aurora and Il Buco are three popular restaurants located in the heart of Sorrento.

La Lanterna is located on Via San Cesareo and it is both a pizzeria and restaurant.

Il Buco is located in the Marina Piccola on Piazza S. Antonino

and Pizzeria Aurora is located in Piazza Tasso
