Sorrento, Positano, Pompeii, Capri -- in 5 days

We are flying int5o Naples, and we want to see Amalfi Coast, Positano, Pompeii and spend a night or so on Capri. We leave from there for Athens.

Where should we put our base for best travel Should we start on Capri for a couple nights and then branch out? We want views, and we want convenience . . . on a budget as much as possible, Any thoughts or specific suggestions for lodging? Thanks!

When are you going?

the time of year will control the size of the crowds - and at least partly what you can get done.

I would head straight to Capri for 2 nights and then spend the rest in Sorrento. I know the latter is on the Bay of Naples but is just around the corner from the Amalfi coast - and allows you to reach them by ferry versus bus - which is more pleasant and gives better views.

Aamlfi and Positano are really very small towns (not cities)cut into the side of the cliff - and exploring them requires lots of climbing up steps to get to many places. We prefer to stay in Sorrento since it is a larger town, with more restaurants and shops, and also the center is flat - no huge climbs to get to a hotel or rest.

From Sorrento you can just hop on the local train to get to Pompeii. go early in the day - since it gets very hot and has practically no shade.

What is your budget? That may dictate where you stay. Capri can be very expensive.
