Sorrento, Positano, Capri
We're going to Italy late May. Starting in ROme then three nights and plan to take the high speed train to Naples. We then have another five nights - planning on driving to Sorrento and Positano with a day trip to Capri. Is this the best route and is it okay for us to drive it? We have an 8 am flight on the last day. Can we drive from Sorrento very early in the morning or is to dangerous and we need to stay at a hotel near the Naples airport?
Thanks. |
I wouldn't rent a car, not because it isn't "okay" but because you don't need it. For what you would likely spend on the car rental (and parking), you could probably hire a driver to meet your train in Naples to take you to your hotel in Sorrento and a driver to pick you up at your hotel in Sorrento to take you to the airport. Use the bus and/or ferry to get to Positano. No car rental means you can enjoy a nice last evening in Sorrento and not have to worry about traffic, returning the rental and arriving in time for flight check-in.

For an idea of some of places you may like to visit in this area, try...
http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/tele The public transport here is very good, and relatively cheap: it's unlikely you'd NEED to have a car (obviously not for Capri), and returning it prior to your check-in might well be an issue to consider... but what time is that? With the usual caution that it's over-due for an update (so do crosscheck any times, prices etc!), for more about the Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast, you may like to download the useful 'Travel Directory' - and the map - from the official tourism website, here... http://www.costiera.it/weben/index.htm ... and the transport maps for various parts of the region that are available here... http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en Peter |
We had a wonderful trip there last summer - my trip report has links to my photos plus links to the hotel and other information you might be interested in. http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...rful-weeks.cfm
I agree that a car is not worth it in the area. The bus ride Sorrento to Positano to Amalfi is a great ride. The boat is wonderful too. We were there 8 days so went up and down the coast a few times and the 'getting there' really was half the fun. I would not have wanted to be worried about finding parking and there's really no where you can't get to by public transportation. |
