Sorrento Passegiata-What is it?
 

Hi: On a couple of posts I've read where people have really enjoyed the "Sorrento Passegiata". Can someone tell me what it is?

Passegiata is an Italian phenomenon (although the French do it to some degree but I don't think it has a name in France). After the work day, around twilight, the Italians take to the streets to stroll, visit with their neighbors, get some fresh air (some would suggest that those in Florence show off their clothing). You will notice it. I haven't been to Sorrento, so I personally don't know what makes it special, but I do know that you will be aware of the passegiata while you are in Italy.

It's common in a lot of smaller places in Italy, Spain and even Southern France (and actually takes place in larger cities but is not so noticeable). Basically a stroll around the town square before dinner by groups of people - some families, some couples and some groups of young people - often segregated by gender - not yet quite ready for the dating process but up for a lot of giggling and teasing.

In Sorrento it lasts into the night on the weekends. It is on the Corso and by the Forno bar at Tasso Square every night.

It is a wonderful way to spend the evening.

On our stay in Sorrento on a Saturday night the main street Corso Italia was closed to traffic. People filled the streets, almost like a street fair. For us it was so festive and one of those serendipitous times you hope to discover during your travels. Deborah

Okay, I have a much better idea now. Many thanks. I wonder if a Sunday night in June, in Sorrento, has as much activity as say Fri. or Sat.?
