Sorrento or Positano Base?
Hi,
We are going to Italy in May/June 06. Initially our plan was to spend 3 days in Naples, 2 in Sorrento and 3 in Capri, however after reading posts here, we are thinking that maybe we would be better off staying in a villa or apartment in Sorrento or Positano and use it as a base and do day trips to Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Capri. What are your thoughts? If having a base, which would you choose, Sorrento or Positano? |
Hi AB,
We very much enjoyed 3 days in Naples, but with only 8 days, and a desire to see Naples, Pompeii, Capri and the AC, I would stay in Sorrento. ((I)) |
There are probably better transportation options in Sorrento, but Positano is much, much prettier & more charming IMHO. There are too many big tour groups in Sorrento, for my tastes.

Hi Angel,
I have passed through Sorrento 4 times and honestly couldn't wait to get out of the place. I like the smaller towns much better! Positano does have good transporation options, but so does Amalfi. Amalfi also has major visible impact of the tour groups though since bus parking is available there. On my trip I stayed 3 nights Praiano, 2 nights Capri and 1 night Naples. I would have liked at least 1 more night in Naples. Buon viaggio! |
I agree with Stu and Dayle. Sorrento can really feel like tour group central as the season starts, and it is far less beautiful and charming.

I'll cast another vote against Sorrento.
The villa or apartment idea is a good one; just make sure that it's accessible to public transportation. I think it was on another board that I read about a villa that one could only get to by car over a bad dirt road. |
Thankyou all for your advice, up until posting this I had Sorrento in my head, thanks to the great advice received, I have now changed this to Positano.
Thanks again. |
Is Positano on the Circumvesuviana route?
|
Travelnut:
The answer is no. From Sorrento, you have to take the SITA bus to Positano. |
ok, thanks..
