Sorrento or Capri?

Will be there for 7 days and want to make the best choice. I say Sorrento, my husband says Capri. Four star hotel recommendations too in either place please!

Dear Margie,

Have the best of both worlds. Four nights in Sorrento ( from there you can go to Pompeii and do the Amalfi Coast).

We stayed at the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento and loved it.

Then take the hydro ferry and spend 3 nights there. (We just day tripped and I wish we could've spent a couple of nights)

Sounds wonderful!

Nancy

It depend on your interest. If you plan on going to the surrounding areas for historic sites, shopping, etc. then I would recommend Sorrento because it is on the main land and you can reach the other areas easier. If however you want to relax and spend the time at a great hotel then taking the hydrofoil over to Capri. Another option is as mentioned above to split the time in each area. Enjoy.

sorrento is your best bet. In case you want to take a day trip and because the people are so friendly.
Janda

I second Nancy's reply. Four days in Sorrento, including day trips to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast, then three days on Capri to relax and see the island. Bella!

Forget Sorrento...go to Positano (the most beautiful town on Amalfi coast), and then catch a ferry for a day to Capri

Margie May 4th, 2002 01:19 PM

Thanks, Elia. That is just what we are going to do. Thank you!

I absolutely second Elia's suggestion to do Positano & Capri instead of Sorrento. They are both amazing...

This thread completely baffles me. Margie, why the heck did you ask? I think this question was a set-up. Every answer says to spend some time in Sorrento and gives you good reasons why. Then one person says simply "skip Sorrento" and Margie says, "thanks, that's what we'll do." I think Margie knew all along what she planned. Do people like Margie just want attention?

I second another poster's suggestion that Capri (and Positano, for that matter) are not the best locations if you are going to be traveling outside of the town you stay in. If you're just going to go and pretty much stay put, either Capri or Positano are great, but Sorrento is much much better for trips to Pompeii, Vesuvius, Naples and onward.

Plus...if you do a search on Capri, you'll find many people (myself included) who advise against the daytrip to Capri. Seems that most people who visit this way come away with a bad experience on the island, as they set them self up to be a lemming and then complain that they felt like a lemming. (They come in with the swarm of tourists, try to hit all the "hot" spots with all the other tourists, then complain because it was too crowded and touristy!) I think that if you're going to do Capri, you should give it a couple of days, get away from the crowds, and give the Capri magic a little time to work on you. (I would suggest the Hotel Caesar Augustus in Anacapri.)

But then again, as the earlier poster said, maybe you already have/had your mind made up?

We stayed for 3 days in Capri - I can't imagine just spending the day as wandering around the town or having an expresso in the morning in town bewfore the crowds get there plus trying different restaurants made it a magical trip - plus we rented a boat to swim and tour the island. That was great - besides the Blue Grotto, there are other caves to explore. have fun and relax
