Sorrento or Amalfi

My daughter will be studying abroad in Chambery, France this summer. First we would like to visit some places in Italy. We have been to France, Germany and even Florence, but would like to see Venice for a couple of days and then head to see the Amalfi coast before going back up to Chambery. We would like to basically do the Amalfi drive one day, and Capri another. Should we base ourselves in Sorrento (which I hear is a lively, fun town) or Amalfi? We are also thinking of convenience for the long trip back up to France. Any advice?

First of all, Sorrento is not on the Amalfi coast. It's easy to get to Sorrento & it has lots of large hotels - so all the big tour groups stay there. IMO, it's not nearly as charming as Positano. I also prefer Positano over Amalfi. It's quite easy to catch a boat to Capri from Positano.

Positano is very lively in the evenings - no cars, so the boardwalk scene next to the water is quite a spectacle. In Amalfi, there is a road between the town and the water.

Thanks Stu!

You certainly helped us make up our minds. We are going to stay in Positano, and as you said take a boat to Capri for the day. We were looking for more of a village type of atmosphere rather then the big hotels of Sorrento. We wanted to be by the water and have more of a feel for Italy. We have already been to Florence - we know how overcrowded it can get. Thanks again!

Venice to Positano is quite a long drive, about 8 hours according to www.mappy.com. You might look into flying Venice to Naples and then Naples to Lyon or Geneva. (But I can't find any such flights at www.whichbudget.com.)

Do you really want to drive the Amalfi Coast?

May I offer a second opinion? I prefer Sorrento. For me, Positano is a lovely tourist destination. Sorrento is a real Italian town where Italians live and work and carry out their day to day lives. Yes, there are tourists there too, but it's more than just a tourist town.

Another thing I've noticed is that it seems like Americans go to Positano and British go to Sorrento. I could be off base, but that's been my observation.

I agree that Sorrento is a lively, fun town. You can easily take a bus for the day to Amalfi or Sorrento or Ravello.
