The Grand Hotel Aminta has a great view from above
the city and is very nice----a 4 star. In town, the
Hotel Cocumella is hard to beat--also a 4 star.
Some good value can be had at the Hotel Loelei--a
small pensione. Good luck.

At the most enthusiastic recommendation of another forum member, we stayed at Hotel Minerva in Sorrento and loved everything about it. It is a perfectly lovely hotel with what has to be the best view possible of the bay. It is right on top of it and while there is a bus stop close by, it is an easy walk, slightly uphill, from the center of town. We met a young couple there from England who were enjoying their third stay there. Another couple had been coming every year for 11 years. I would go back in a minute and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. It was closer to $100 than $150, but I hope this won't dissuade you. You don't say when you are going. We were there in October, and the rates are a little lower then than during high season. Tip: If interested in Capidomonte, buy it there. I was told I could get it anywhere in Italy, and since we still had three more weeks to go, I decided to wait. Bad decision. I never saw it again and am still lamenting not having purchased it in Sorrento. Oh, well, just another excuse to go back.

Please - forget all the other advice you received on hotels in Sorrento and please, please stay at the HOTEL GRAND VESUVIO. You won't be sorry. If you love luxury, you must stay here. Let me know how your trip was. Bon Voyage!

My friend and I stayed at the Grand Excelsior Vittoria at Sorrento and I can thoroughly recommend it for a splurge hotel. It would definitely be around the US$150/night bracket, including half board if required. It has its own private beach (via lift), sumptuous dining rooms and public rooms and a pool area with a bar. It's surrounded by gardens, yet right in the centre of town and about a 10 minute walk (with luggage) from the Circumvesuviana. Our room overlooked the Bay of Naples (most rooms have a balcony) and in mid September there are fireworks almost every night around the bay to mark the end of summer. The hotel atmosphere is one of old world elegance - if you're way too casual the gate staff will question you! The concierge is extremely helpful and was very good with making arrangements for us when a tour bus forgot to pick us up. Have a great holiday. Ciao.

Marilyn: The Sorrento Palace is just wonderful! We stayed there for four days in Nov and just loved it. The view is spectacular and it has wonderful accomodations, including bathrobes. It is located up on a hill outside of town overlooking the bay and hav five swimming pools. It is a semi-steep walk uphill from downtown, but we walked it a couple of times a day. If you want more specific info - just e-mail me. Have a great trip
