Sorrento area accommodation

We are travelling to the Sorrento area in September for 6 days and plan to visit Naples, Pompeii, Capri , Amalfi etc. Is Sorrento the best base? Also looking for suggestions for accommodation for 3 adults preferably with pool and beach access for 2-300 Euro per night.

Yes for your plans IMO Sorrento is by far the best base. Though not as dreamy a place as say seaside towns on the Amalfi Coast it is nevertheless a pleasant watering hole and a utilitarian one because you have trains to nearby Pompeii (Pompeii-Scavi station right by the entrance to the ruins) and frequent boats to Capri, Ischia (another gem that rivals Capri in beauty if not fame) and Naples and via the dramatic world-famous Amalfi Coast buses or occasional boats to the Amalfi Coast.

And Sorrento has tons of hotels and the hectic busy season will be just over so should be a surfeit of accommodations to chose from - in that price range no problemo.

We loved the Hotel Mediterraneo in Sorrento. Well, technically it is in Sant'Agnello but it is a 20 minute easy walk partly along streets with lovely ocean views, or the hotel runs a shuttle.

They have a great pool which we used ( mid October) which has a pizza cafe right there so you can have lunch or drinks. There is an elevator across the street which takes you to the bathing platform on the sea, should still be open during your time frame, was closed in October.

We had beautiful ocean views, the staff were great, breakfast was included and plentiful, there were some great little restaurants within walking distance, plus the top floor dining room had amazing views and good food. www.mediterraneosorrento.com

We used Sorrento as a base to see Pompeii and Capri and had a separate stay on the Amalfi itself. We really enjoyed Sorrento.

Rota suites, a little apartment and if you stay for five nights you get passes to Hotel Riciera, excellent pool and ocean docks.

Sorrento is a great base for getting to other places and you do need a hotel with a pool. Also in the center (flat part) of town - not in the hills above.

I wouldn't worry about the beach - it doesn;t really have much of one - along with many towns on the AC.

Another excursion you can easily do from a Sorrento base is to ascend Mt Vesuvius and peer into the crater - you can walk up thru lava remains or take a mini-bus.

We've stayed twice at the Hotel Antiche Mura in Sorrento and loved it. An easy walk to the train/bus station for day trips as well as an easy walk into town for shopping and eating. They have a pool amidst a lovely lemon grove and a fabulous breakfast, and great service. The price fits your budget too. No beach access, but the beaches on the AC aren't all that great IMO anyway.
