Soon to be new bridge in Venice

Here is the article from ansa.it regarding the new bridge in Venice. Quite interesting as it seems like this has been talked about for such a long time. When it is finally installed it will be helpful but personally I don't like the looks of it.

Thanks LoveItaly; Interesting article, and I hadn't heard about it. Glad I hadn't scheduled a trip for that time, though, with the canal traffic held up during construction.

Hi annw, yes that will be interesting won't it. But in a way I wish I was going to be there to see everything, it will be quite interesting I am sure. The Italians are always soooo slow getting projects completed I wonder if this bridge truly will be opened on schedule.

Thanks for posting this LoveItaly.

I think your concern about its 'looks' will turn out to be unfounded. Calatrava's designs are consistently beautiful...

My computer can't open the link.

Where is this bridge? Thanks for mentioning it - never heard of such plans either.

Chunks of the long-delayed structure will be sent up the famed canal from the end of July to August 12, when the central span will be carefully squeezed under the Rialto Bridge, Mayor Massimo Cacciari said.

River traffic will be suspended on the five nights the futuristic pieces designed by acclaimed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava are in motion so as to keep disruption to a minimum.

Venetians will at long last awake on August 12 to find the structure in place ahead of bolting, rivetting and months of finishing work that will enable it to be unveiled by the end of the year.

Speaking earlier this month at the inauguration of a current Rome show on his work, Calatrava said the bridge, which will link Venice's rail station with a huge carpark on the other side, was now certain to be in place by year's end.

I first saw a picture of that bridge right where it is to be placed, on a project board-- several years ago. In fact, I've thought that some of that barriered construction in the area of Piazzale Roma was the foundation work for that bridge. That's been in the works and blocked off for years.

Dear Loveitaly:

Calatrava designed the Sundial Bridge in Redding. I haven't seen it in person, but it is lovely in photos.
