I think many of us who post frequently on the board develop pet-peeves, and even those change from time to time.

My current one is "will I be safe?". I have to restrain myself from posting what first comes to mind... i don't know, how ditzy are you?

Some people are new to travel, some are new to the internet &/or BB's and how they work. Either having patience or ignoring posts that bug you both work for me.

Am I missing something here?
Who would want to hang out in a smokey bar if they can't stand smoke?

I will only buy the book if it will discuss how to pack travellers checks when visiting Europe in the winter. I chck in often but will skip many posts if I think it's the same old topic. Who knows what I've missed. Or is that what keeps us all coming back for more?

Ahem, Intrepid1, the Superthread is unwieldy because of the limitations of the technology on the forum. There's really not much the contributors can do to make this better. I mean, how does one organize a forum that's inherently unorganizable? Posts, once posted, cannot be deleted or modified. So how do you delete stuff that's obsolete? How do you correct incorrect info, etc.? It's all impossible.

But I do think that it serves a purpose, though people may disagree. Of course some people will always ask again, but then others will bother to read the FAQ before asking again. But at least there's an index of some sort in the Superthread.

I don't think that there's much more that can be done beyond the systematic and dedicated maintenance of a website devoted to new travelers. In a way, you could argue that Fodors' Destinations series does this (Best in X days, etc.), but many people don't even think about checking those out before asking.

And who wants to spend (unpaid) time maintaining a website dedicated to helping newbies out?

I just don't think that there's a good solution. And, as people mentioned, one is free to skip whatever posts one isn't inclined to read or respond to, and that I definitely agree. There's nothing that says that this forum is for experienced travelers only. And personally, I think that I learn a lot by reading some of the responses to the most mundane of questions.

And before someone jumps at me for the stream-of-consciousness post, the first couple of paragraphs defends the Superthread (so, in that sense, I disagree with Intrepid1), but the last couple have nothing to do necesarily with whatever I've said in the first couple of paragraphs. I'm just echoing some of the sentiments already expressed.

There's another thread almost identical to this one currently circling the U.S. forum.

As someone (Patrick, I believe) so nicely pointed out, this particular topic itself could fall into the category of "same old posts".

If you don't want to read or answer a question, ignore it. Others will surely be able to answer.

Sorry-

and I meant that - in the other thread on the U.S. forum - Patrick pointed out that this topic has been posted before quite often.

Somebody ought to write a book to tell people to lighten up.

I can think of other book titles that would be appropriate, but I'll shut up for now.
