this 'which country ...' poster is clearly not responsible. Please ignore his/her endless posts.

toopping for these words from a special person.

KL467 Jan 27th, 2008 08:44 AM

Thank you, Wes. Well said.

Wes Fowler's wisdom is surely missed even years after his passing. He was a class act.

bellastarr Jan 27th, 2008 09:09 AM

Thanks for topping this. What words of wisdom.

This original thread is almost 10 years old and it is just as relevant now as back then.

So - why does it seem so many need to be reminded of this?

gruezi Feb 3rd, 2008 08:56 AM

Well, at least on Fodor's, it's true that the more things change the more they stay the same...

I thought the lounge was set up for this. Not required in the Europe esction surely

janisj Feb 3rd, 2008 10:48 AM

bilboburgler: The lounge didn't even exist until about 7+ years after this was posted. wes fowler, the OP, was a long-time fodorite who died several years ago.

Judyrem Feb 3rd, 2008 10:55 AM

I met Wes at our Atl GTG and he was a class act. His post is right on. Leave it to Tony Hughes to disagree,,,,he was a corker :-).

How many people who posted in 1999 are still here? I can't recognize most of the names but I know that some changed their names.

> The boorish, impolite guest, the guest with unjustified airs of superiority and the guest who subjects his fellows to ridicule is rarely reinvited.

Too bad we can't unreinvite those people. (I find them to be the most intolerable.)

> to be patient with and respectful of those who submit queries no matter how naïve their questions may seem.

Yes! (Weren't we all newbies at one time?)

> regardless of how well meaning our motives may be, to avoid perpetuating and encouraging diatribes by actively participating in them.

That's so hard sometimes. :S

> to use wit and humor to alleviate the anxieties and uncertainties of novice travelers, not to subject them to what they may perceive to be ridicule.

Great idea, but that takes talent, intelligence, and grace.

> "Behave!"

Aww, come on now- how fun is that? ((6))

Sadly to say to newcomers, Wes Fowler was an wise and prolific posters who is no longer with us here at Fodor's (because he passed away).

Thyra Feb 7th, 2008 01:18 PM

Ahh, I do miss our Wes, he was a real asset to the board, I, like Connie, was formerly a regular Fodor's poster, but several nasty and mean spirited responses to my posts put me off and I am only recently checking back (I am doing a vow renewal ceremony this Thursday in Paris). The early days of Fodors were really supportive and fun, I hope the spirit can come back!

Judyrem Feb 7th, 2008 02:16 PM

Thyra...it is so good to hear from you!!!!!! Congrats, on your vow renewal ceremony in Paris...it sounds so romantic! Please still post here!!!

MonicaRichards Feb 7th, 2008 03:08 PM

Wow, I can't believe it but I have been posting on this forum that long. I reread all the names and they all sound so familiar. How time flies!

edgecorp Feb 7th, 2008 03:12 PM

I believe that this is a much-needed reminder. I began to use this site before a family trip in 2006. When we returned, I felt that I needed to post a trip report, because I had gleaned so much valuable info from reading others'. Guess what the first response to my report said? Something along the lines of "Do others find this report as full of meaningless detail as I do?" Needless to say, I was mortified at my attempt.

It HAS been refreshing, while researching our upcoming trip, to see that everyone seems to be very supportive of currently submitted trip reports. I intend to give it one more try this time around, myself....

I've been posting since 1993, pretty much from the onset of the Forum. I first posted under my husband's name because I was using his e-mail, then under my real name. When Fodor's instituted registration, I changed to the actual screen name.

Wes was here in 1993, his favorite subject was Germany, knew it really well and his advice was always so great. He loved literature, too and I often read his posts as if reading a class dissertation from a professor. He is so missed.

i_am_kane Feb 8th, 2008 04:52 AM

I, too, have been on this board a long time...since 2000.

When I remember those early days, this forum had witty, informative, funny posters. There were many times when I laughed so hard, my belly hurt.

Times have changed. And, yes, Wes Fowler was a prince among men.
