Some questions regarding a trip to Sicily

Jump to last reply

I am planning a trip to Sicily and would like to use public buses to get around the island. We would fly into Catania and out of Palermo and would plan to stay about 11-14 days .

A rough itinerary would be as follows:

Days 1 -Arrive in Catania and take the bus to Taormina.
Day 2-Sightsee in Taormina
Day 3-Visit Mt. Etna by bus. Return to Taormina and take the bus to Ortigia.
Day 4-Sightsee Ortigia and Siracusa
Day5-Rent a car for the day to see Noto, Modica and perhaps Ragusa (if time allows)
Day6-Take the bus to Palermo
Day7-Sightsee Palermo
Day8-Day trip by bus to Agrigento (2 hours by bus each way)
Day 9-Day trip by bus to Piazza Armerina (2-2.5 hours each way)
Day10-Day trip to Monreale
Day 11-Fly home

1-Does this seem doable by bus in the time I have allocated? We don't like a lot of downtime on our trips, but we want to sightsee in a reasonable, unrushed way.

2-Would you add a second day to do additional sightseeing in Palermo, or any other place I have mentioned.? We could add days as we are not on any schedule.

3-Any suggestions for centrally located hotels convenient to the bus stations in Taormina, Palermo and Ortigia would be appreciated.

I'd like to go to Sicily in March, but think it may be rainy. We could go anytime, but ideally I'd like to go when the weather is cold in Massachusetts. Any first hand input about the weather in Sicily in late winter/early spring would be appreciated. ( I have checked weatherbase.com, but statistics aren't always that helpful)
