Some questions about exit row seats
 

Electronic ticketing allows you to pick emergency exit row seats on domestic flights. Can you do the same thing on trans-Atlantic trips? Or does it vary by airline? I was just checking the seating charts on Lufthansa B777s, and there is no indication of which rows are exit aisles. Are these standard on 777s? And information appreciated.

On some airlines you have to have premium status with them in order to pick out exit row seats ahead of time.

According to Lufthansa's website, they don't have 777s in their fleet.

Could it be a codeshare on a UA 777? Check www.seatguru.com or www.united.com for the location of exit rows on UA's 777s. UA typically requires you to be a premier exec or 1K to pre-reserve an exit row, although you could luck out a check in.

I have a premium status on Delta and was able to book exit row in advance. Now on my return the AF people tried to take it away from me claiming that I could not have booked it in advance. I refused to budge, had a print out and got my seat back. (until I found someone else in it, which actually worked out well. He cursed that he was a preimum flyer and refused to move, I got upgraded to Business Class)

Depends on airline, I've found. Not sure about Lufthansa. We have booked the exit aisle with Air New Zealand (also a United partner) without any sort of flyer status, but not with BA or AA.

Personally I prefer the row immediately behind the exit row. Typically exit row seats don't recline as much as the others and as a result you tend to be more comfortable.

ms go, I rechecked the Orbitz site for a Lufthansa flight from Dulles to Munich on April 20. They list a Boeing 777?? I don't see any indication that it's a codeshare. Am I miissing something?

LH9281/9280 = UA902/903

These are on UA's 777. Clearly stated on Orbitz.com as "operated by United Airlines". Lufthansa is one of few major Western airlines in the world that doesn't operate the 777.

You are not correct. On the smaller jets, MD80, B737, B757, etc. there are 2 exit rows, one behind the other. So for example, AA's MD80 exit rows are rows 20 and 21. The ONLY 2 seats in these two rows that don't recline at all are seats A and F in row 20. The other 8 seats (seats B,C,E in row 20 and all the seats in row 21 recline totally). The reason for the window seats in the first exit row seat not reclining? because they would block the little exit door in row 21, but exit row 21 doesn't have that problem since there is no door in row 22.

That is true for the other models mentioned above as well as just about any other model with only 1 exit row. They all recline.

The exit row seat on a UA767 does not recline. Plus it's a little chilly. I had the window seat from Zurich to Dulles and had a blanket over me the whole time. I was not happy that the seat didn't recline more than a couple of inches! Wish I had checked seatguru or seatexpert before giving my TA the OK to book the seat!

Forgot to add that I have premier exec status with UA and can book my own seats on line. Actually, I don't think my TA booked me that seat.. I did it to myself! UGH But I'll remember the mistake next time and get something better.

simpsonc510, your information is valuable for those of us who do not want our knees destroyed. It looks like a backup option to an exit row is the row behind, at least on some planes and carriers.

Regatdless if the exit row reclines or not you STILL get about 4-5 inches of LEGROOM. Try that in the row behind!
