Some help with metro in Paris
 

We have to get from Gare de Lyon (where our train from Lyon will come in) to metro station Chemin Vert (metro line 5 I believe) - which is very near to our apartment. I am looking at small metro map of Paris (my eyes are no longer as good as they used to be)and it seems we will need to make a couple of changes to get there. Can anyone please tell me the easiest way to get there by metro, or would it just be easier to get a taxi from Gare de Lyon (assuming they are easy to pick up there)? Thanks.

Looks like a bus - #20 - may be the fastest, about 9 minutes direct.

I'd definitely do the bus. Metro stations can have lots of stairs

While I like to take the bus, there are two problems for those who are new to Paris; finding a place for your luggage if the bus is crowded and knowing exactly where to disembark.

Had you simply given your address it would have made recommendation easier but you might be able to simply take M1 to Bastille and walk. If it is raining or you have a good amount of luggage, taxis are plentiful at Gare de Lyon. When you exit the front of the station, go to the taxi queue on the right. The taxis on the left are for those who have have made reservations.

I agree on taxi if you have lots of luggage. I can't see the cost at being more than 10 euros.

I have easily walked from the Gare de Lyon to Place de Vosges. Piece of cake, Miss Thing.

If you are taking the Metro: Take Line 1 to Bastille (Direction: Defense) and transfer to Line 8 (Direction: Balard) for Chemin de Vert.

What is the Metro in Paris now for that zone, a little over 1 euro?

So, for two people that would be about three euros.

For the 7 extra euros, I would take a cab.

A single metro ticket is 1.7 euro. If you buy a carnet, it is 1.25 euro. A single ticket hasn't been about a euro for many years, probably since around 2003.

However, I would probably take a taxi myself due to the changes unless I had hardly any luggage at all (which to me means a purse and perhaps a 20 inch rollaboard).

Looks like bus 65 and 29 (though a block walk from the station, it turns down R. St Gilles at Chemin Vert - if you are going that way) also go there...but I agree with P_Peppington that if you have more than a couple of carry-ons (and/or it is rush-hour), the bus is probably not your best bet.

I arrived at Gare Lyon yesterday (19th) and I had a 22" suitcase, but it was heavy, so I would definitely recommend the taxi, but be prepared, I stood in the taxi line for a good 25 min. in the VERY cool weather now in Paris. Coming from the south I was not prepared and was really feeling the cold. Taxi fare to the 6th was 6.50 euro - no brainer really.

I had to go buy warmer clothes today!!

Hi Barb! Buying clothes in Paris - POOR YOU! :-) We had a beautiful day in Portland on Tuesday, otherwise the fall has been chilly and rainy early in the PNW this year, so enjoy Paris in any weather!

Well I would rather be cold in Paris than back home in Seattle. But I have to say it is very cold here tonite. I just saw it is down to 34. But I'm not complaining.

Thanks everyone .... we have decided on the taxi since there will be 3 of us (+ a suitcase each) .... and initially may not be too sure where to get off the bus. I got a map of the station clearly showing the taxi ranks - thanks, Sarastro, for the clue to go right rather than left. Barb, you confirmed what I thought may be the case .... a long taxi queue. I will factor that in when I give my landlord my estimated time of arrival. (We will be prepared for the cold Barb - we will be there December).
