Some General Generalizations

1. French bread is better than Italian.
2. Food in England, generally, isn't very interesting.
3. German people tend, generally, to be ridid and too much concerned with clean
4. French people are not, generally, very concerned with clean or body odor.
5. Danish, generally, are pretty lazy, since it is a socialist country and they pay you not to work.
6. Italians, generally, are pretty disorganized and driving on their roads is chancy, at best.
7. Muslim people, generally, are fanatical. They don't trust the west.
8. Women, generally, are thinner in Europe because they don't eat all the time.
9. Spainish men are, generally, too macho.

Now, don't you see the folly of making generalizations.???

1 True, and France, itself, is a gourmet restaurant.
2 The Indian food is great and very interesting
3 How can you be too concerned with being clean?
4. Been there a few times. Haven't smelled one yet, even on the metro. But maybe that's why they make perfumes!5. Naw! Just love the Danes! They're the greatest.
6. True about the driving. They are maniacs! And, they love to go on strike! And, Fiats stink. I should know. I owned one.
7. How true! But, how can you not be fanatical when you have a hot line to Allah!
8. Not for long! I'm sure they'll catch up with us.
9. Don't know. I hear they are the hottest, though.

Folly, what folly?

I'll add one:

10. American women are too concerned with how they appear to others.

NO. Generalizations are just mostly true ideas, like these. Stupid post.

thecontest May 10th, 2002 04:25 PM

Do you think it has a chance of making it into the stupidest post contest?

I regret to inform you that, unless there are more stupid replies, this thread will not qualify.

Barring stupid replies pertaining to the subject matter, a good tangent could help this thread, or some serious and totally uncalled for bashing and ranting and raving between posters.

The point is, it is unfair to sterotype people....don't you get it. I don't think it is a stupid post. People write in "are European women skinnier, are the French rude, Do the spanish respect women. " DUH! Of course some are some arent, some do, most don''t. I think the point is that if you travel you will learn to discard some of your predudices. But maybe not, considering the quality of poster on this forum.

Sandi,Candy

The point is, one thing you learn when you travel abroad is that each country really does have its unique flavor. And viva la difference!

Of course, individuals are individuals all over the world, and we are all deserving of respect. But cultures are not the same, and people make up those cultures, creating them, perpetuating them, and being shaped by them.

These differences are not just in the type of food eaten, music, or language spoken. They include world-view, values, expectations, and many other elements of thinking and behavior.

So, most people who travel from country to country or are exposed to people from different nations (or who study history, international relations, political science, anthropology, etc.) note these differences and often make general statements to try to describe them.

And, you mentioned a specific that irks you, the thread on why Europeans are thinner. This is not speculation. This is a fact, supported by overwhelming statistics. Do you think the percentage of overweight people in America is purely coincidental and has nothing to do with our culture and lifestlye?

Observe and you will see Europeans are starting to gain weight also, and I'm sure there are statistics to back that up. The US is just way ahead, as usual.

Rather than denying it exists, it is important to try to figure out what is causing this "clustering" of overweight in America and to try to figure out what can be done about it. Obviously, not every American is overweight. But you'd have to be dense not to see what is happening in America. And that is just one example, brought up by Candy (interesting name, by the way....)

So, get off your PC high horses and open your eyes. You might actually learn something!
