Solo trip to Tuscany...would you drive by yourself? And where to stay if you don't?

"...to discover if a map is "good", find a village name, the location, and than look at the map you are planning on buying to see if it is mentioned on the map."
GOOD POINT, LoveItaly! Part of the problem my sister and I had was that the road signs listed several towns, but the map didn't always have the same towns on it, so we didn't know in which direction to go!

beachy1, that is often the problem. I won't take credit for this idea though. Learned if from a friend in Italy back in the 70's when we had 2 months in Italy and did a driving tour.
Best advise we ever got.
My daughter uses this when buying a dictionary BTW. She looks up a very uncommon word and if it is not in the dictionary she does not buy it.
Also, I just had a thought. In lots of places now when one parks on the street one has to buy a permit and put in on the dashboard to show they have paid. Usually purchased from tabacco shops.
Not sure what places require this or not even sure how one knows where and when to do this as now that I am on my own I travel to Italy and than get together with friends in a smallish town in Veneto (which started this system). Than travel by train or my friends drive.
Am confused because in residential areas of Florence this is not done but than again think they buy a month or yearly parking pass. Not sure.
Well, nothing like bringing up another question and than not having the answer. Almost deleted that part of my post but than thought SusanP should be aware as we sure don't want her to get a slew of parking tickets as rental car co. would put these on her credit card.
Oh, the details of traveling. But worth it.

SusanP, just had a thought regarding buying an hour/two hours or so on parking ticket permit where needed. When you park the car go into the nearest shop or cafe etc. and ask. Am sure they will be able to advise you and tell you if necessary or not and if you do need one where you buy it.

Kathryn, that's a good point about the GPS navigation, I'll remember that.
Suzie, I'll see what I can do to help!
LoveItaly, it's good to know about those permits. Anyone know more about how to find out if you need one? I take it there isn't necessarily a sign indicating that?
