Some suggestions:
1. Acropolis and surrounding slopes (roman agora, stoa etc). Took me about 8 hours to pretty much cover the area including many of the shopping streets in the Plaka.
2. A walk up Filipanos Hill near Plaka is a lovely diversion - great views of Acropolis and the city. Also a walk or tram ride up the large hill Lycavittos is nice for the views as well.
3. National Museum. Only took me about 2.5hours, very nice. The University is on the same street I believe - nice campus.
4. A ramble around Monstriaki - its a market/shopping area outlined on any Athens map.
5. I never did get to see the temple of Olympian Zeus but wish I had.
6. Do try to check out the changing of the National Guard - its a building across (Parliament?)the street from the national gardens....(can anyone help with this?. Its interesting.
As for restaurants: I loved Diogenesis in the Plaka - for a land mark, its is next to a large circular tower that was a monks cell once (you should eventually run into it wandering around Plaka). It has a stunning vine covered canopy and is on the expensive side but if you go for a lunch or what not its ok for the budget minded.
Also, if you stand at the Student Travellers Inn (Kydathineon St) and walk into the Plaka further go straight, straight keep going, up some stairs until you come across this family restaurant with no observable name that sits alone with a out door eating area on your left hand side and the yellow coloured restaurant on your right hand side. Great simple food, decent price.
Have a great time in Athens!
Cheers,
Murphy

Don't miss the Benaki Collection. It used to be free on a Thursday. If you want out of the city for a day, pop down to Piraeus and get a ferry to Aegina or even Hydra. A bus ride to Sounion is also recommended, you get the bus on the street going up from Syntagma towards Hadrians Arch. Leaves every hour on the half hour. The sign on the bus says Sounion in Greek!
I shall also be in Athens solo but leave on the 6th Sept. Enjoy it.
