Sojourn in the North

My wife and I are going to Italy in the beginning of October for about three months. We would like to stay in a house in the countryside near a small village that has a café, bakery, and farmers’ market and which is a short drive to Verona or Bologna. If anyone has any recommendations for a good locale, we would greatly appreciate it.

Do you mean this year, in just two weeks? Somewhere around Vicenza might work.

Yes, this October 10th we arrive. I'll look into Vicenza, thanks!

farmers market and village,

I think you'll need a town

Ferrara say or some of the other towns in the Po

You may find the train is a better way to get around, as parking is removed and you go right into the centre easily

Those two aren't recommendations merely ideas you might like to explore

Have you spent time before this in Italy?
Just curious. Winter does not seem a time most people would choose to spend three months in that area. What is the draw? Are you a writer?

Hi, Well, forty years ago I spent one of the best years of my life in Italy: First, in Urbino for six weeks of total immersion for the language, then in Florence for the academic year at the University of Florence, then three months of the summer as a lifeguard in Viarregio. While living there as a student, I traveled quite a bit around Italy on the week-ends by train and bus. After that beautiful year when I was young, I have visited Italy only for short visits for business or vacation. In answer to the second part of your question, we have been living in New York City for the past twenty-three years, up until a few years ago, happily. Now, however, the City has changed so much for the worse that we are thinking of moving. You are right, I am a writer (among other things), and our objective this trip is to explore and determine if there is any place in Italy we could see ourselves living indefinitely. (If not, we'll have had a nice three months in a beautiful and tranquil locale.) Our ideal place to stay on this trip would be a house in the countryside, walking or bicycling distance from a small village, within an hour's drive of a larger city like Florence, Bologna, Verona, etc.

Sounds like a sensible plan, if at somewhat short notice. Just make sure your 3 months is only 90 days including arrival and departure days if you don't have EU passports.

Thanks, we do!

The Po is very flat and Ferrara is exceptionally cycling positive. With a large church and a castle it is nice place, with good train links.

I'm going to check it out, thanks, we're all about cycling!

Also loook at Bassano del Grappa, located in the Veneto too.
