Italian regular championship starts in early September and ends in early May. October is a good month, regular season games are played on Saturday's nights and on Sundays. During the week you may have some European champion's league games (where only the three or four best team from each country can participate). The greatest game of the year to see in Rome is when the two roman teams (Roma and Lazio) play each others. There is a great rivality between them, it is a very emotional game which occures twice during the regular season, generally between october and november, and btw february and march.
30th of July traditionally is the day when the Italian League release the league's calendar.
For now, check:
www.asroma.it

Trevor, I believe I answered your question "Are there soccer games in Rome in October?" If you don't want a question answered, don't ask it.
