Soccer
 

We are going to Italy the last part of August & first part of September. Our family all have things that we want to see, and my son's only request is soccer. Soccer, soccer, soccer.

I know that it is the Italian's favorite sport- do you all know how to go about seeing a game while we're there? We're going to be in Rome, Tuscany, Cinque Terre area, Venice and Sorrento area.

Hi Missy - I'm not sure what date the new season starts, but his best chance on your itinerary would be in Rome.

There is a home match every weekend at the Stadio Olimpico - either AS ROMA or LAZIO.

Both Roma and Nazio* are easy to get tickets for. In fact most italian games are reasonably easy to get tickets for in my experience.

*Lazio are vile fascists - hence the nickname. If you do go - stay out of the Cuervas (the bits behind the goals). They're dangerous.

you're in the wrong part of the country for good football ... but yes, stay away from the cheap cuervas tickets.

the fixtures are announced on july 31st and the new season starts august 26nd.

The Curvas are not dangerous, not much of a view though.

Depending where you were in Tuscany, there are a number of Serie A sides: Fiorentina (Florence) AC Siena, Livorno and Empoli.

I went to a game in Siena, sat in the Curva Robur, and frankly have been in more intimidating surrounding at the post office on pension day. That said, I would probaly try and avoid similar sections at Lazio or Roma matches.

I don't think of the curvas as generally dangerous, but besides the views, there are some games/stadiums where you could end up standing all game and parts can get rowdy.

It can range anywhere from a great, classic football experience to a huge headache .... depending on your mood and how it plays out.

Also make sure you get "home team" tickets. I was at a Juvi-Livorno game a couple of years ago (before the demotion) and the Livorno boosters were cordoned off in a far upper section with security every few rows. They were not allowed to leave the stadium until long after the game ended ...

don't be silly, of course they would only be dangerous if you were an away fan. They are filled of fans from all countries being friendly as long as you have the right colours.

Who's silly? I was agreeing with you that the curvas aren't dangerous.

The part about the tickets was general advice for where ever one might to sit ... anywhere in the stadium.

Given Americans' overall shallow knowledge about the sport, it seemed a useful addition.

You are a good mother. I feel guilty that we did not go to the Saturday soccer match in Rome the weekend we were there earlier this year, because I know our son would have liked it. (In my defense this was not something he specifically requested for the trip)
One point you may want to consider for your son: our son was quite frustrated because the apartment we rented in Rome did not have cable so he wasn't able to see much soccer on TV except "highlights" of various games on the news. He had enjoyed watching games in other European rentals and hotels.

Thank you, Vttraveler...let the guilt go....us moms carry too much around! haha Besides, there is also a selfish motive. The kids will be much happier sludging through churches and art galleries if there is a promise of some pools, parks & a soccer game!
