So You Think Your Economy is in a Mess?

Today I held 5 Billion Dollars in my hand. Billion, not Million. It was just a single paper note. If I wanted to buy a beer, I would have to have 2 of these notes.
Don't worry about European currency too much............You would have to have a madman at the helm to let the value of a country's currency scrape the bottom of the barrel of hell. Once a long time ago, a very acceptable Zimbabwe dollar.

PS. It has a date deadline. Spend it or loose it.

Good heavens. It's probably worth more to sell it on ebay. That's sad.

We came across a similar experience on a smaller scale in Venezuela in the late 90's. The US $ was 400 to 1 Bolivar.

The workers would exchange their hard earned Bolivars for US$ as soon as they could. I wonder if they would do that now with the state of our economy?

It made for a very economical vacation for us, but we heard so many sad stories of the devaluation of their money.

About 20 years ago I took a cruise with stops in Brazil. We were told it was best to pay in USD, although change will be given in local currency. I paid for a T-shirt with a $20 bill and when I got my change, one of the notes was 1,000,000. At the time I was amused to think that I was a millionaire. But looking back it is very sad to think how the Brazilian economy must have suffered so 1,000,000 of the local currency was only worth about $10 US.

According to Wikipedia.
When Zimbabwe gained independance in 1980, the Zimbabwe dollar was pegged at US $1.47 as was the Rhodesian dollar.
In 2005 it was devalued by 1,000 percent.
As tod posts it now costs $10 Billion for a beer.

As Jannis sang.
Freedom is just another word, for nothing left to loose.

Devalued by 100% = value 0.

It is not possible to devalue by 1000%. However, it is possible for the other currency to rise 1000%.
