Ira, funny about the Mao jacket. When I was going to China I left room in my suitcase for a Mao jacket, I have always wanted one. But I looked all over and couldn't find any in natural fabric, they are all polyesther so I didn't get one.
I do have my Mao jacket standards, lol.

Scarlett...you will be happy to know that I live in Florida and wear all black. You will be fine!! I actually bought a pink shirt this summer and have worn it several times. I am dying for the FAB 5 to visit me too.

Jor...what are secret underpants???

My method... I choose my best 4-5 outfits from home, that match the season/weather I'll be traveling to. Ones that are comfortable, most stylish, and look good on me.

I have had much better luck with this approach than trying to assemble a "travel" wardrobe of new stuff.

For Heather, My only specific advice is... Don't take too many pair of jeans, mostly because they are heavy and bulky to pack. If that's your normal style though, maybe some chinos or jean-style but in microfiber. Comfortable black slacks are always great to have along.

Why do you wear black, black, black? People in Europe use other colors too. I don't understand why you feel you are well dressed only if you're wearing black. Don't you know how to dress well in other colors?

Tere, you are falling on deaf ears, my friends in France can tell the American women immediately because they will be wearing black.

I can usually spot My Fellow Americans because they are wearing khaki, usually with white tennis shoes and a white tee shirt.

Nothing wrong with that but it is just easier to spot someone to speak English with.

I have worn mostly black since I wanted to be a retro beatnik in my early teens and just haven't grown out of it, but I do leave my bongos at home.

It's not about Europe... I wear alot of black at home too. Especially in cotton knits, it looks good for days at a time. Generally more "durable" pieces for traveling, then a pressed light-color material. I'm not trying to fool anyone or "not look like a tourist", rather be packed light and efficiently, and not look too dumb when dressed each AM!

Hello, I'm surprised by all the people who don't wear sneakers while sightseeing. I have never found shoes comfortable while doing a lot of walking. When we travel, we are usually walking all day. We are going to Prague and Poland in October and I definitely plan on wearing sneakers for daytime sightseeing. That is even more important for me now because I sprained and fractured my ankle in April and it is still not back to normal. I also have osteoporosis so I have to wear sneakers. I just bought a pair of Brooks walking shoes. I plan on bringing a couple pairs of nice jeans, black slacks and blue slacks. I do plan on wearing the sneakers with the black slacks and blue slacks. I hope that doesn't look odd but I don't have a choice. Even before I had these health issues, I always found sneakers the most comfortable for walking. Nothing is worse than a pair of blistered, painful feet at the end of the day. I plan on bringing either a skirt, probablly black or a dark pantsuit, but can only wear flat, black shoes. Definitely no heels for me! For outerwear, I just bought a new red, waterproof fall jacket with a removable lining. So if it is warm, I can remove the lining.

Trainers (a British term) = tennis shoes = sneakers......pretty much interchangeable.

Dress as you normally do when you are out and about. I think your original post covers it, but I might throw in a blazer for the theater.

Most important are comfortable walking shoes. I find trainers don't always give my feet the best support.

Assume you'll have a camera, so really doesn't matter if you dress like tourist or not now does it... ;-)

Wear whatever you want and stop stressing about clothing. Wear comfortable shoes and go about your business and enjoy the sights!!

Who cares if you have white shoes!?!?! What you wear is not a big deal once you get there! Just be respectful of religious institutions and follow traditional customs.

... just a tip for anyone going to FL in the coming weeks - pack for hot weather.

... if black turns you on, try to stay inside. These days it's seems to be white, wheat, grey (light) and tans (light). And a splash of color.

... black is fabulous, to be sure, but knowing when and where is essential. FL is soooo cool, because it has seasons ... and black is "in" later fall and into the early spring months.

... this is what's happening in South Beach, Palm Beach and the Keys. The West Coast is a bit more informal - and narry a black windbreaker to be spotted anywhere, not even among the "early bird" folks who dine at 4.
