So how much did your airfare to Italia cost? (euros per km from your home)

I thought it might be interesting to compare airfare prices to Italia from around the world. I'll kick off with mine.

It costs me almost 7 euro cents per kilometre (or 11 euro cents per mile) to get from New Zealand to Venice.

Airfare: NZ$2310 (euro 1315)
Miles: 12,032 (converted to 19,363 kms at http://www.convertunits.com/from/miles/to/km)

which works out at 6.7 euro cents for every kilometer.

Well, I can fly from Liverpool to Milan (Bergamo) on Ryanair in December for £6 all-in. It's 1242 km so £0.0048 or 0.48p or 0.41 euro cents per km. It will be more if I have checked luggage.

Better comparison on a full-service airline like Lufthansa, via Frankfurt, would be £159 return so 6.4p per km or 3.5 euro cents per km.

We paid £125 for 1000 miles from Birmingham, UK to Rome in October during the half term break. I believe that works out to around 0.17€/NM

Very interesting... Using the timeanddate link, NZ to Venice is 18528 kilometers or 11513 miles or 10004 nautical miles.

So that works out at:

7 euro cents per kilometre
11.4 euro cents per mile
13.14 euro cents per nautical mile

Ouch. It seems there really is a price for living here in paradise!

Airfares differ by season, airline, etc. Here in Canada (Toronto) I would consider $750+ a good deal for fare to Rome/Venice in low season and $1000+ - in high. It'll work out to anywhere between 10 to 15 US cents (or 7 to 10 euro cents) per km. So you are getting better deal in NZ.

Rates per km are much lower for inter European flights on discount carriers.

We don't seem to get any good deals from where I live (tropical Queensland). So, from Cairns, Queensland to Venice works out at 8.1 cents/km, or 13.06 cents/mile.

Return flight is $2470, and it is 15223 km/9459 miles.

Gosh, maybe we aren't doing so badly. Probably feeling the sting a lot this week as we've purchased 5 adult airfares and will be eating out the freezer for the rest of the month!

The airfares we purchased were the early bird releases and that's pretty much as cheap as it gets unless you want horrendous connections / copious numbers of flights with a lesser known airline. Yvonne, I'm surprised yours are so dear given the shorter number of kms.

Mine are all star alliance but given its such a cheap fare, no air point/loyalty rewards will be earned,

For people asking for air from Toronto the better deals in season (May to Oct) are from Canadian travel operators (Alba Tours charters with Alitalia) and Air Transat. They usually get discounted around 30 day prior to departure.

Also Alitalia has sales (sign up for mailing list). Same true for other European carriers (KLM/Lufthansa/BA/AF) especially off season. Recently KLM had $699 fare to Venice (up to April 2012). These sales are short (2-3 days)

9 liters of diesel fuel, but then it's not flying.
