Snow in October
 

Hi,

We are planning to go to a mountain top in mid of October as my 6 year old niece wants to play in the snow. Where can I find snow at that time of the year. I am aware that jungfraujoch is one option. But was wondering if there is any other places. May be Chamonix or any other place.

In mid-October, you could only count on glacier snow, like the Jungfrau. While it 'might' snow somewhere, there are obviously no weather guarantees. It could just as easily be unseasonably warm, or you could be in one place when it snows somewhere else.

Jungfraujoch would be sure but costs an arm and a leg and more to get there - but there is a lot up there besides hard snow at that time of year - children under 16 in Switzerland can get a free Family Pass where they never pay anything for what adults buy or have a pass for. Jungfrau area has so so much to see and do besides that train to Europe's highest station - are you traveling by train? If so any plans - a Swiss Travel Pass could be a great deal if going around Switzerland much (I would not pay zillions of bucks just to go to Jungfraujoch but a week or more in Switzerland could be neat. Yes, it has to be the glacier snow. We are not looking for snow fall! But glacier snow where the kid can play.

Thank you, Jean. Will check on the Allalin glacier. I am also thinking on Mount Titlis which also will have snow all year round.
Are there any options in Italy or France for the same?

Yeah France and Italy have just as high Alps - well France' Mont Blanc the highest of all - but with few exceptions lacking the easy access the myriad of mountain trains and aerial gondolas and postal buses makes getting to snow very easy.

In Switzerland, the following lifts go into snow and ice:
Col du Pillon (Gstaad) - Glacier 3000
Engelberg - Titlis
Surlej (Silvaplana) - Corvatsch
Bernina Diavolezza - Diavolezza
Zermatt - Kleinmatterhorn
Saas Fee - Mittelallalin
Fiesch - Fiescheralp (about 1 hr on foot from Aletsch Glacier)

New snow rarely falls in October. There are exceptions of course, but it if suddenly snows, usually the roads to where it snowed are closed. If you take the cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix, there will be plenty of snow, but the price will be considerable.

It might be time to start telling your niece that one cannot always do what one wants.
