Snow coverage of the UK
It looks very pretty in this picture but I wouldn't want to be driving around the UK in these conditions!

Indeed beautiful and I love the snow, but not enjoyed 2 nights of about -12C and day time max of -6C to -8C in Glasgow. Just not normal at all...
The English roads are mostly back to normal but the pavements outside the big cities are like Ice. Scotland looks pretty bad still
-15c last night in parts of N Ireland and I heard on the radio this morning that Perth in Scotland would be -14c all day today. Our major roads are OK but minor roads are treacherous as are all the pavements. I bought crampons for wearing over my shoes when out walking the dog. Forecast is for a thaw next couple of days and the cold weather to return next week.
alihutch, I've been hearing about the frigid temperatures, definitely not normal! I hope it warms up soon!
bilbo, Glad to hear the roads are improving! |
cambe, Crampons for dog walking, really? They tend to be associated with Everest expeditions in my mind but no doubt warranted in such conditions.
Glad I live here in a less snowy climate.
so do you want to stop global warming?
Thing is we're not normally snowy climes! About 4/5 times in 10 years...but this is 2 years running and this is the worst anyone has seen it for a very long time.
"so do you want to stop global warming?"
Er climate change causes extremes, not just higher temperatures. So this is all part of it....so yes...in answer to your question, yes! |
Thanks sassy_cat there's also piles of snow, and lots of stuck cars around. Although I'm heading out to the city centre in a while...wish me luck!
Sassy-cat, They are not real crampons but an over show that has metal grippers on the toe and heel. I live on my own with my dog and can't afford to break a leg or hip. Believe me these are great as our pavements have been frozen solid for 2 weeks and very slippy.
The last time we had weather like this was 1962!! |
ahh cambe, I grew up hearing about the winter of '62. I was born '63 before the worst was over and my mother wasn't happy to have a newborn plus several feet of snow outside!
Be safe! ailhutch, good luck! Nikki <<Glad I live here in a less snowy climate.>> Ha ha, wait till January. We've been lucky so far but it can't last! |
sassy_cat, I don't know where you live but stay warm.
cambe, I'm in Massachusetts and it's cold, -3C right now but very sunny and bright. No snow, yet!
>I'm heading out to the city centre in a while...wish me luck!<
I'd avoid it if you can Ali. Been out in it all day and it's a complete skating rink. Compacted ice and snow giving no traction at all and the temp already back down to -11. If I didn't have a portable jumpstarter in the car I'd have been stuck after my battery drained after a few stops and starts. Roads around the Southside are treacherous and the Eastend is, if anything worse. M77 isn't too bad and M8 is passable in the city. |
I was driving today and what was noticable was how the snow that had been compressed by previous traffic as now hard as rock.
I also noticed that there was 4 inches of ice on local pavements |
It takes me about 20 minutes to slip-slide my way to the bus stop, when it normally takes me 5 minutes. Pavements are much worse than roads now.
You should be here in London,Ontario. We have just had the storm of the century and have 103cm (that is 40.1 inches for Americans)on the ground after 3 days of continuous snow. A small town 20km north has 153cm and it is higher than the parking meters. it is hard for me to feel much sympathy for my fellow Scots.
