snorkel in Greek islands

Is there snorkelling in Greek Islands - how about other islands around Europe?

i am afraid not

after a fatal incident in 1997 where a snorkeller was mistaken for a periscope of a turkish submarine, all snorkelling was banned around the greek islands.

Snorkelling isn't any good in the Greek islands because they're not tropical, thus no colorful coral formations or colorful schools of curious fish.

Contrary to the last post you will see plenty of people snorkelling around the Greek islands. I've been persuaded to try it myself, despite not being a strong swimmer. It may not be tropical but there are plenty of interesting fishes, especially round the more rocky coves.

East coast of Crete is quite well known for it.

Has anyone got any information about snorkling among the ruins? I had read something about it in a guidebook of Crete and was wondering what other people's experience had been . Ostensibly, one can see ruins in the area of Olous, in the northeastern area of Crete.

My information on this is dated, but it used to be highly illegal, with the idea of preventing theft and vandalism. Just for the sake of archaeological preservation I hope it still is.
