SNCF: New Senior Plus
 

The French Railways (SNCF) is testing a new product called Senior Plus...offered to over 60s when they buy a train ticket - for a fixed sum, yet to be announced, SNCF will pick up seniors baggage from their residence, make sure the residence is correctly locked up and convey the passengers and their luggage to the train station - making the train more accessible to challenged seniors and just more convenient for all!

Valid for all seniors or only EU residents?

Well, that's great............if your residence is in France. Not much help to tourists, though, unless they'll pick you up from a hotel, which I highly doubt.

I think that is a very nice service for seniors who need help -- depending on the price, of course. You could easily hire a taxi to do that, couldn't you? Although maybe SNCF is going to personally escort them and their bags onto the train.

As I read the old fogeys section of the SNCF website, that's precisely what Senior Plus does.

For anyone, anywhere, of the right age who's forked out €50 for the Carte Senior.

Personally, at that age I'd pay to guarantee no pimply youth patronised the bejayzus out of me (the thought that a 60 yo needs a bleeding adolescent to check I've locked the house is preposterous even by French standards of useless public spending)

No doubt some EU fund (aka my tax) is subsidising this ridiculous job-creation scheme for the unemployable.

Way to go, Flanneruk! I am so damn tired of people ..and a lot of fordorites..thinking anyone over 60 needs an iron lung and a wheelchair! I'm a bit closer to 70 and I may not stay out and drink till dawn or boogie..or whatever they do these days..but I'll walk your butt off and at least know what I;m looking t!

Good heavens, if a 60 plus age person needs to pay someone to make sure their property is locked up properly are they going to have the wherewithall to know where to get off the train when they arrive at their destination?

And I wonder how well these employees will be checked out. Maybe I was in the insurance business to long but it sounds like a great opportunity for some employees to advise their "buddies" which properties will be vacant due to the customer taking off on vacation. It sure happened in my area once when newspaper customers called in and put a "vacation hold" on their newspaper. Information was sold by newspapers delivery people to others and consequently the residences were burglarized. But of course that can happen with taxi drivers also.

And I can see an advantage for those that have physical problems regardless of their age. But what about at the other end of the trip. Will there be the service to get them and their luggage to the hotel etc?

Anyway, interesting concept.

If you are so feeble of mind that you need someone to lock up your home for you maybe you should not be traveling. I'll stick to my Carte Senior program,lock my own doors and travel for half price.

I'm in Paris now, just spent 4 great days on the Normandy coast at Honfleur, Deauville and Etretat. I highly recommend it.

Going to Nice tomorrow on a 45 euro SNCF Prem ticket.
