I think the official designation is that if you are smoking in the room it is a smoking room. If you aren't smoking in the room, it is a non-smoking room.

Seriously, it is not a common thing to find the choice in Italy except at some of the larger four star hotels and American chain hotels. At least that's been my experience.

I once asked for and got a non-smoking room in Rome. There was a little sign on the table than said "Thank you for not-smoking" in several languages. There were also three ashtrays provided in the room and the room reeked of smoke. I'd take the promise of a non-smoking room with a giant grain of salt.

Hi Smokeless,
As we are of like tastes in the rooms we stay in, I thought I'd mention this. What has been written on this thread about a mere "passing nod" at smoke-free rooms is generally correct; Europeans do not try to "enforce" the differentiation very stridently. However, I've found pretty good guest compliance when I stayed in facilities that as an entire entity are smoke-free. There are a couple of such places in Rome; Casa Howard guest house near the Spanish Steps, and Hotel Des Artistes, closer to Termini.

Buon Viaggio,
BC
