I think I'm going to Scotland this coming September, so I'd like to be sure that it will be bearable indoors by then. I was surprised to hear that the ban was such a success in Italy, though the second to last time I was there, I was amazed that some heavy smokers I'd met two years earlier had quit smoking and that nonsmokers were being more open about saying that they'd always hated being around smoke. I remember how awful it used to be during my school and most of my working years until only about 12(?) years ago when smoking was allowed in schools and workplaces. I had constant headaches and chronic coughs.

Hi cmt, even though I enjoy an occassional cigarette (never around other nonsmokers) I feel your pain. I remember one time in Rome when we were in a bank as we had to cash in some traveller checks (way before ATM's). Every bank clerk was smoking and the ashtrays were overflowing with cigarette butts. I actually got nauseated and dizzy, LOL. For some reason that incident has always stayed in my mind.

Yes - the smoking ban did take effect from 26 March & so far it seems to have been well observed.

I was in Scotland on March 26 when the ban started. It appeared to me that everyplace was abiding by this new law without incident. It was so nice to go into the pubs without smoke! Everyplace there were new NO SMOKING signs up. Even up in the highlands where there were few people and the pub owner admitted that there would not be anybody there to enforce it - they were respectful and went outdoors to smoke.

I was also in Scotland on this big day. It seemed most people are very much in favor of it. The bar tenders we spoke with were excited.

A lot of pubs, etc.. will have nice tents and outside tables set upp for the smokers.

Totlly uniform, I think. I read something about 6 breaches in the first week.

It applies in all enclosed work places.
