Honestly Suze, I'm Dutch and visit Amsterdam quite often, but don't know what a Smart Shop is. It's probably not in the PC Hooftstraat then? But then, I've never been to a coffeeshop either.

If not interested in visiting the coffeeshops, it probably doesn't matter the definitions. I'm certainly no expert, but the guidebook I mentioned above differentiated between the two for the types of products they had on offer.
