Small Towns in Switzerland with toddlers(no hiking)
we are traveling to Spain and deciding between Switzerland or Italy(Rome and Amalfi Coast) as a 2nd destination. We’ve been to Italy twice and love it, but were thinking of traveling to a place we’ve never been, so I thought Switzerland. We are traveling with 26 month old toddlers. This will be our 4th trip to Europe with them, so traveling with kids around Europe is not a big issue. I know Switzerland is big on outdoors, but we are not looking to do any hiking(maybe just small flatter trails). I’m more interested in visiting a few smaller “picturesque” villages where we can just walk around, visit some shops, enjoy good food, see a few sites that don’t require full day trips. I have not thought about a base town/city yet,, but we will have a car for a few days. We also plan to fly out of a main airport to Barcelona, where we will fly home from. Total trip is 18 full days, not including travel. |
We traveled to Switzerland with our twins a few years ago and it was perfect. They were 6 so older than your toddlers, but it still worked out well. We stayed in the BO, in Grindelwald, where there is a great playground right in the middle of town. There were playgrounds seemingly everywhere, with stunning views, including alongside some lifts (a stop up to First, right outside the station in Gimmelwald, etc). We were just in Italy earlier this month and didn't find nearly as many (nice) playgrounds in the towns were were in. We've always traveled with our girls and they are definitely better in outdoorsy locations where they can get fresh air and we aren't dragging them from museum to museum. The scenery is ridiculously beautiful.

Grindelwald is great - small town but not sleepy with many tourists basing here - and one of few towns in the area you can drive to. Get a hotel with a balcony and view of all this:

Great! Thanks. I am not looking to take them to museums as much as I would otherwise go if traveling without kids. I've been reading up on Switzerland. I might save this for when they are older since they are boys and will want to perhaps go fishing or on small hikes(if they are anything like my husband, lol.)

I like Mürren or Wengen better than Grindelwald because they are car free. It is much more relaxing to let toddlers walk in the streets without the constant flux of cars. Wengen will have the occasional golf cart to carry luggage to go through, Mürren is even quieter. In Mürren you have a funicular called the Allmendhubel; on the top there is a children playground. There is also a children adventure trail.
