small towns

Nearly finshed planning for July in Italy. (Single woman alone, simple travel, one bag.) Will have done all the big cities, now want small towns as I make my way north to fly out of Milan. I've searched past threads for info, scoured websites and guidebooks but welcome your personal opinion.

How would you spend four days/nights?

Siena, San Gimagano, Vaireggio, Pisa and Lucca (where would you stay? I will have already spent time in Florence, return there or choose another base?)

Cinque Terre (is this two or three nights, or can you walk all five towns and spend one night?)

Lake Como (which town?)

Oops, forgot to mention that I am traveling by train!

"small towns" could be asking about anywhere in Europe. I'd re-post w/ a better title.

Something like "Heading north to Milan - which small towns to spend 4 days?"

DH and I enjoyed the lovely beach at Viareggio about a year and a half ago. We just happened onto it, as we had a car and were free to explore new and different places. We were there in the early spring, before the crowds. I understand this lovely stretch of beach can get crowded in the hot summer months.

Hi Simpson,

Where did you stay in Viareggio? Would you recommend it?

Thanks!
