small scenic villages to stay in in Italy

Does anyone know of any small towns or villages that 3 other people and myself could stay in for a couple of days near these cities:
Venice
Rome
Florence
?
We do not want to spend a ton and we do not want to carry luggage around like we would have to with backpacking and staying in hostels. We want to experience the country more than a tour would allow us. Please help!!

You have to give us more information. What time of year? How will you get to the town.... car, bus, train, walk? How much are you willing to spend for a night? Do you want to be in a little town or a single place miles from a town?

What's your priority: Experiencing small-town Italy or spending the least money while exploring Venice, Rome and Florence? If the latter, you may find staying outside of the city will cost more when you add in daily transportation costs. Again, if the latter is your priority, consider staying in apartments IN the cities.

If you are talking about only 3 days or so, I would suggest you stay somewhere you can use the trains for day trips, but stay for less $$ than in the big towns. It would be easy to stay in, say Orvieto, and take the train to Rome for a day trip on one day, and to Florence for a day trip on another and enjoy Orvieto itself on another day. On the other hand, you haven't told us your budget requirements.

We spent a month in Italy this past September, and the most we paid anywhere was 90Euro per night (and considerably less the 2 weeks we had a flat in Umbria near Spoleto.) Of course with 4 people, you would be looking at either 2 doubles or for an apartment that had two bedrooms and was suitable for 4 people. If you want an apartment, it is usually easier to get a good deal for a longer period of time -- like a week.

Do you really want to stay outside of the cities or is it because you think it will be cheaper?

???? More info, pls ...... your post is a bit confusing. Do you want suggestions of small towns/villages to enjoy countryside and avoid hubbub of city? OR, is what you're really wanting is accomadations that are more economical than what you may be budgeting? And of course that raises budget issue .....

As it's not clear precisely what you are seeking, responses unsure.
FYI, have you had a look-see on www.eurocheapo.com or on www.venere.com ??

Orvieto is a good choice since is a wonderful little town between Rome and Florence with also a bit of nightlife. Only drawback is the fact that if you move by train there will be less transport options in the night. Don't even consider going by car since the outskirts of Rome are terribly traffic jammed in the early morning and late afternoon. Another option very close to Rome is the little village of Castel Gandolfo, summer residence of the Pope, just half hour by train from downtown Rome (cheap 2 euro ticket) and facing a stunning lake. It's also relatively cheap, if compared to Rome hotels.
Bye, Max
