small Paris hotel advice
 

I am taking my parents for a short trip to Paris next month. I want character, they like at least moderate level of comfort. Has anyone stayed in either Hotel Clos Medicis, Select or Grand-Hommes? other Recommendations?

I love the Grand Hommes, and it's twin, the Hotel du Pantheon. But be warned, if you stay there, you are walking uphill to the Pantheon last thing at night when you return to your hotel. Clos Medicis is also nice, but I wasn't crazy about the neighborhood - just a little bit too close to Blvd. St. Michel for me. (I don't need a steady diet of chain stores and teenagers)<BR>Enjoy your trip!

I like the area and think it's very convenient and pleasant, and nice to be near the Luxembourg Gardens. I wouldn't let the hill factor worry you as the Pantheon is on Ste-Genevieve hill, but it is not a big steep hill or anything--the steepest walk is from the south, from rue des Ecoles or that direction. If you come to it from the Luxembourg RER/metro stop (or that direction, I'm not sure it's even noticeable that it's a hill and it's only a slight grade from that direction, if that (I don't feel like I'm going uphill when walking rue Soufflot towards the Pantheon). I think I'd like that location near the Pantheon more than being in Sorbonne square where the Select is (which is rather hectic, could be fine if you get a quiet room). Also, I think the ones near the Pantheon are slightly closer to the RER/metro stop and there are some nicer restaurants and shops near it. Also, several bus lines stop across the street from that corner where place Rostand is. I haven't stayed in one of those, however.

My favorite hotel in Paris is Hotel du Pantheon...the rooms are newly decorated and the location is fabulous...their breakfast room is lovely and they do serve a good meal with a very good selection...I remember having to walk up hill only from rue Moufettard, where by the way there are many cafes and shops...Le Pantheon is right across the street and there's church there named in honor of Ste. Genevieve that is spectacular...the neighborhood is so very nice and there are many cafes and shops all along rue Soufflot, etc.

Can either of you tell me whether there's much difference between the size of rooms in Pantheon and Grands Hommes?

My husband and I wanted to stay at a quaint Parisian hotel and we stayed at the Hotel Britannique - 20, Avenue Victoria. It is an English hotel with a lot of charm and very pleasant, clean accommodations. The rooms are small, however. This property is located 1 block from the Seine River - walking distance to Saint Chapelle, Notre Dame, the Louve, Musee d'Orsay. and other attractions. It is on a quiet street (1-2 blocks from Rue Rivoli) but walking distance to bistros, bakery, etc. They do a nice breakfast buffet every morning. Depending on what you and your parents want to do in Paris will dictate where you should stay. This hotel is also steps away from the train. <BR>

I would love to stay at the du Pantheon on my next trip to Paris;acording to my info. the rooms are very expensinve starting around $300 is this true; how much was your room if you do not mind me asking?<BR>thanks...Sherri<BR>to the top

I enquired about a triple room for a week at the Hotel du Pantheon in April for this fall. They offered me a rate of 213 euro and said they'd try to reserve us a room with a view. However, we were not able to go. I don't think I have seen their rates as high as 300 euro (or $300) but I may be wrong.

I don't know if there's a difference in the size of the rooms at Hotel du Pantheon or Grand-Hommes...I loved my room at Hotel du Pantheon...it was chambre #53 and it was very lovely..it is small by US standards, but I didn't feel closed in at all...it faces Le Pantheon and I loved watching the street scenes in the morning as people rushed off to work and school...I was last there in 1999 and they were still completing the renovations on the staircase and other rooms so I got that room for a steal...I think I paid about $110.00 per night with breakfast...I know it costs much more now...by the way, the toilet is in a separate room from the tub/shower combo and sink...I know that's not so unusual in Europe and maybe this isn't either, but the toilet bowl is long and square and when you close the door, the door is right at your knees...it was hilarious.

My sister stayed at the hotel Pantheon and she said it made her trip to Paris even more memorable because of the architecture and furnishings.

As best I remember, the room sizes in Grand Hommes and Pantheon were virtually identical. And I've NEVER paid more than $150 per night to stay there - double occupancy. Maybe it's because I travel in very "off" seasons.

Bonjour, we are at the Hotel D'Aubusson on Rue Dauphine right now and it is very nice. The courtyard is great for breakfast or an afternoon drink and the service is very friendly and attentive. An excellent location within walking distance of Notre Dame and the Seine. Tres bonne!
