I highly recommend Relais Christine in the 6th, close to the 5th. Have stayed there twice in the last two years. It's on a quiet lane off of Rue Dauphne, very close to the Seine (Pont Neuf), walking distance to Notre Dame, the Louvre and just a block from St Germain Blvd. Lots of good restaurants nearby.

By small, I understand small, clean and not expensive.
If it corresponds, here some recommendations :
Paix (hotel de la) 19 Rue du Gros Caillou 7e
Chopin passage Jouffroy 6e
Clément 6e
Lys (hotel du) Rue Serpente 6e
Tourisme Avenue (hotel) 66 Avenue de la Motte-Picquet 7e
Chopin is very small, very charmin in a small 'passage couvert' (an alley inside buidings).
Clément is superbly situated and quite nice..
Lys is very old and 'à colombages'...
Tourisme is just outside La Motte Grenelle Métro station.
Hotel de la paix was the cheapest of those. Less than 100 €.
mvg.

All true except that the Hotel Chopin is in the 9th, a good distance from the 6th and even farther from the 7th. Otherwise it´s a great suggestion if that is what the OP wants.
Unless the OP decides to give some guidance on his budget window, making all of these suggestions could prove fruitless.

Hotel de L'Empereur is well-positioned, nicely renovated and reasonably priced in the 7th. I've stayed there many times, and it is consistently good. I also like its sister hotel, the Muguet, as mentioned above (which can be slightly dearer).

Both in the 7th, on the same street. I like this part of the 7th, as it is closer to the boundary of the 6th than to the Eiffel Tower.
Hotel de Varenne
Hotel du Palais Bourbon
The Varenne has one room with a Eiffel Tower view and the Palais Bourbon has a top floor room that is romantic and charming.

I will be staying at the Hotel Le Walt in the 7th for the fourth time starting Dec.20 for three weeks...metro entrance practically right outside the door and many bus options. I have stayed at the Muguet many times, but had trouble getting an answer to email reservation requests. Both hotels are excellent with easy access to restaurants and cafes and both have pleasant and helpful staffs. The Bourdonnais is in the same group as the Le Walt and is very nice as well.....Vicki

We will look for a place in a moderate price range but realize that it is after all, Paris. Proximity to the Metro was useful on prior trips.
Do not assume Paris to be so expensive. I have said many times I can eat better and cheaper in Paris than in my home town and the same is true of hotels.

If I can add one more to the mix, the Bourgogne et Montana. A lovely little hotel that was renovated about a year ago. Stylish yet comfortable. Elegant and welcoming.
