Small historic British cities

The Observer has a nice feature on Britain's small historic cities.
They tend to be off the main tourist track, but are well worth visiting

An interesting selection. Lots of history but don't expect a non-stop whirl of sight-seeing, more a relaxed day or so as the article implies.

BTW, Winchester is a cataclysmically awful place to drive in for those who don't know it. I'm not sure why Inverary is there. I would only go there as an emergency back-stop if the weather in Argyll turned a bit too 'Scottish' to allow anything else.

If you're going to Winchester - go by train. If you drive - that way madness lies.

Inverary makes a good base to explore a little known bit of Scotland, plus there is good eating and drinking to be had close by - it is on Loch Fyne, home of the Oyster bar, and some truly great pub restaurants further down the loch!
However last year it was in complete chaos at the beginning of September due to a pop festival at the castle. luckily we were staying on the other side of the loch and only had to put up with the bass booming for one night. We waited until the end of our week there to actually go into Inverary once the crowds had finally dispersed.

Hereford is lovely, Ludlow is crowded now it has become foodie heaven.

I've been in all 10 of them. Do I get a prize.? I have to say Sherborne is my favorite but I'd sleep and eat at Plumber Manor rather than their recommendations

The only one I've missed is Knaresborough - have driven through but not stopped. Guess I'll have to plan a visit.

Damn,

I was going to say the only one i've been to is Knaresborough. But then Truro popped up at the end.
