small apartment, Lake Maggiore, como, orta

My husband and I are planning a trip to
the Lake Como, Maggiore, Lage D'orta area in Italy for 2 weeks. We are looking to stay in a moderately priced small apartment, with kitchenette & lake view, with small balcony if possible. We'd
prefer a lake where we can also swim if possible. Any suggestions for the Lake area.
We plan to rent a car, so parking is also
preferred. Any pertinent info would be
appreciated.

We have booked an apartment on Lake Maggiore for mid-October with a balcony, view, parking, etc. through IHEN.com. #VA 1247. Haven't been there yet, but the pix and recommendations from past guests look great--the owner has been very accommodating in our correspondence. Will post a report after we stay.

Hi Marcia
Last year we (2 couples) stayed in an apartment on Lake Como just north of Menaggio (Nobialo) Had a small balconey, view of the lake and was very moderately priced. We dealt direct with the owner and if you are interested will try and find his contact details (I seem to recall he had a couple of other apartments as well) It was clean, neat and tidy and had everything we wanted inc. washing machine. There was a parking bay outside on the road.

Apartments of varying sizes at very reasonable rates in the middle of Bellagio. Parking available.

FYI, the lakes are fed by snowmelt. People do swim (and sail, waterski, etc.), but the water is cold. There is a very nice public pool complex on the shore of Lake Como just a few dozen meters outside Bellagio in the direction of Villa Melzi.

Hi Ron,
I'd definitely appreciate the details on the apartment you stayed at on Lake Como. Could you swim in Lake? Was there a walkway on the lake close by?
Thank you!

Hi Jean,
Thank you also for the info re. Bellagio apartment. From what I've read
re. Bellagio, it seems that there's a lot of hills to walk up and down to get
to apartment, supermarket, and take long
walks. Did you find that? We'd like to
spend some time in Bellagio, but I'm not
sure we'd stay there for 2 weeks. Did you take trips from there, and how convenient was it?
Marcia

If you have mobility issues, Bellagio would be difficult. Most of the "streets" in the tourist area are actually cobblestone stairways. Not like residential stairs in your home but sloping walkways with steps every meter or so. The slope is not extreme, and everyone is walking very slowly because they're window-shopping as they go. Frankly, the stairways are much of what makes Bellagio so charming.

Residence La Limonera, however, is on a real street, and their parking is immediately outside the gates to the property. Take this road in one direction, and you'd end up at the ferry dock and then along the lake shore heading in the direction (ultimately) of Como. Go the other way, and the road winds up into the hills where the views only get better and better.

I would love to spend two weeks there but only in conjunction with a very long stay in Italy. There are many towns and sights along the lake that are easily accessible on day trips with or without a car. But if my vacation was limited to two weeks in total, I'd spend 4-5 days there and then move on to other wonderful Italian towns.

Hi Marcia
The contact for the Lake Como apartment (just north of Menaggio) was Camillo Tassoni email : [email protected] He had a website also:
www.menaggio-apartments.com
Was a great little spot, a pleasant walk back into Menaggio past the rock climbing area where the locals showed the most amazing climbing prowess - at least to my untrained eye! Also just below the apartment was the start of the walk which runs along the old Roman Road ending in Rezzonico.
And equally importantly there was a small tavern down on the roadside below the apartment complex. Just the thing after a hard day sight seeing!!

Thank you for all the helpful information!

I'm also looking forward to hearing from
Roamer regarding his trip to Italy in October.
Hope all goes well and you have a great trip.
