Slow ferries-Mykonos to Santorini
 

We are traveling from Mykonos to Santorini in July. I see that Hellenic Seaway's travel this route once a day but are there others? I have seen messages that suggest taking a slow ferry into Santorini to appreciate the view. Does anyone know if there are any from Mykonos?

The only direct ferry between Mykonos and Santorini is the HS highspeed ferry, but you could take a different ferry from Mykonos to Paros and change to the slower Blue Star car ferry to Santorini which would give you the full effect of the arrival view.

The HS highspeed arrives in Paros at 11:50 and the Blue Star ferry leaves Paros at 12:10. Is this too tight of a connection?

I found Sea Jets which arrive in Paros at 10:40. Do you think this is O.K.?

Sea Jets will give you time to relax and have a quick look around the port area of Paros. Take that one.

I was looking at the schedules and it looks like we could also go through Naxos (spend 2 hrs there). Is one port and or route better than the other? I love your idea. I really appreciate the help!

No, one port's no better than the other. Just be sure of the schedule for making the connection.

Don't try this sort of thing in Hi-season it's very hot and crowded getting on and off ferries, it's a scrum. Also with changing ferry schedules, connections can be dodgy.

You will just make very heavy weather of getting to the island. Paros and Naxos are way better islands to stay on than Mykonos and Santorini. Also much easier ferry connections.

The only reservation I have with SeaJet 2 is, due to its small size, it is more prone to cancellation in high winds than other catamarans, including the Mykonos-Santorini Flying Cat 4. Also, in July these small ferries are often full, so you will need to get your tickets in advance.

Retsina makes a good point about hot and crowded conditions boarding the ferries in Jul. You are squeezed together in a buidling with open sides that looks more like a cattle shed than a terminal. If you are lucky you can get in the shade. That two hour layover could end up a sweaty and miserable experience.

Paros has a live webcam at the port, http://www.parosweb.com/paros-webcams/port2.html, so you can see for yourself. You may have to turn off pop-up controls to get a picture. Ferries arrive in the late morning and afternoon Greek time, and there is a flurry of activity each time one docks. This time of year there aren't many foot passengers, but in July the shed-like building will be overflowing.

BTW, the Naxos port is much the same, so it won't be any better there.

OP, after Santorini, are you leaving via ferry rather than plane?? If so, then you can take a "slow" ferry OUT of the caldera and get the same effect in reverse.
