Slovenia and Croatia in January (Solo)
Hi, my friend would like to have a solo trip to Slovenia and Zagreb, Croatia in January. She will be flying to Ljubljana Airport and leaving Slovenia from the same airport because the flight from Croatia is too expensive. She is wondering how many days is enough in Slovenia since she wants to visit Zagreb as well. She can spend 9 days or maximum 16 days covering both countries. She can't drive so she has to use the public transport all the time. Considering it is during winter, any advice such as must/feasible places to visit and safety tips for a female solo traveler is very much appreciated!

I’m a woman who spent a solo month in Slovenia and Croatia and had no difficulties whatsoever. Of course, there are no guarantees and normal precautions are always appropriate.
Public transportation in the area is comfortable and convenient.
How much time to spend in any place depends on one’s interests. Some people spend just 4 or 5 days in Slovenia and think that was enough; others are happy to spend a couple of weeks there.
Here’s what I recommend: She should get, or consult, a couple of really good guidebooks (I strongly recommend the Rough Guide for these countries), decide what she wants to see and do, check opening hours on the internet, and plot things out on a calendar so she can decide how much time SHE wants for each location. Good guidebooks will provide information about daylight hours, but she can also check timeanddate.com, which also provides good climate statistics. For public transportation options, she can consult rome2rio.com, but she should definitely check the links it provides, as the main rome2rio site is not sensitive to seasonal variation in schedules.
Slovenia is delightful, and I really enjoyed Zagreb, too.
You might also encourage her to post here on Fodor’s – I’m sure that several of us will be happy to provide input once she has a rough plan or to answer questions.

I agree that she should have no concerns about safety (provided she takes reasonable precautions) and that bus transport in the area is good. At least in summer and shoulder season.
I would not travel in that area in the middle of winter, except to ski areas. Last time I was in the Balkans tourist facilities were already shutting down in October, although the capitals should be better.

"She is wondering how many days is enough in Slovenia"
All depends on the places she wants to visit. I cannot imagine someone to book a flight into a country without knowing what she wants to do there.
