Hi Terri,

In the Spring of 99 my best friend and I stayed at the Hotel San Maurizio in Venice. We were on the road for a month so decent but inexpensive was high on the list.

We liked this hotel. Walking distance to St. Marks, the owner Antonio was super nice and the room was clean and neat. We had shared bathroom in the hall and a seperate shared shower room but they were spotless.

I think it was around $75 a night for a double.

http://venice.italy.allwebhotels.com...l/6809/intl/en

We spent 8 days in Venice in July at the San Georgio Hotel. It is about 16 rooms and I believe all have mini fridges and safes and A/C. They are small, but clean and have nice people working there. They even have a hotel cat. It was in San Marco, not close, but within walking distance to San Marco Plaza. It was very close to the Grand Canal (San Angelo) vaporetto stop and there were a lot of places to eat and shop near by. To anyone spending more that a couple of days in Venice, it is well worth buying a pass for the vaporetto. It is great for the transportation, of course, but sometimes we just rode around to rest our feet, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
http://www.veniceby.com/hotelsangior...es/profile.htm

I hope I don't get blasted for suggesting this. I do not know what your style or age is. If you don't mind shared rooms and bathrooms there are Hostels in Venice which cost around maybe $20 per person. I stayed at one several years ago when it was a bit cheaper. If you have never done the Hostel thing it might be an new experience for 2 nights, but forget any bedtime romance.
Just a thought. Use a search engine with keywords vinice hostel.

We're stayin at Locanda Leon Bianco (www.leonbianco.it) For 2 rooms (my family of 5) we're paying a total 210 Euros. Sounds more than reasonable! Who knows? Maybe it's a real loser. Will find out on June 21.

Ashcanannie: I have stayed in every room shown on the Leon Bianco site, and I liked them all. The rooms I stayed in were very large, and when we were with two other couples on one trip, all of our rooms connected which was very convenient. The people are very nice. I hope you have one room with canal view. There is nothing like eating breakfast and watching the city come alive on Grand Canal. I don't think they have air conditioning, but I was there once in June and don't remember being hot.

I have a res at "Hotel Alex" in March. A double, no bath, for 3 nights, 70Euros/night. The proprietor, Mario, has been very responsive to all of my emails (a rarity w/ small Italian hotels!).

I'm crossing my fingers that it will be a decent place. I like its location near where San Polo and Dorsoduro adjoin eachother.
