Sleep in a castle? Germany/Austria/Switzerland

My family's first European trip will be from Frankfurt to Salzburg to the Lucerne area in May. I'd really like my family to experience sleeping in a real medieval castle one night. Is this a possibility? If so, any suggestions?

The only castle hotel where I have ever stayed is not on your route (northern Germany, near Holland) - - but here's a page full - -

...can't vouch for any of them...

but this one sounds quite good, and only 70 km from Frankfurt airport, apparently...

Try Relais & Chateau some of which, as the name suggests, are in castles. Take a look at http://www.relaischateaux.com. Karen Brown also has some castle hotels on her lists, take a look at karenbrown.com

If you're going to be in the vicinity of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, there is a very nice castle hotel (Burg Colmberg) just a few kms. east.

Mrs. Fly was initially a bit disappointed as the guest rooms are quite modern inside, but the food, the views and the creakiness of the rest of the place won her over.

I also pointed out that if she really wanted an authentic castle experience, we would have been peeing into chamberpots or out of the windows, bathing twice a year in cold water, and contending with spiders, fleas and bedbugs.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll look into each of them. I'm not interested in peeing into chamberpots, cold baths, or creepy crawlies, but as authentic of an experience as I can get while maintaining some sort of dignity is what I'm going for!

My wife and I have stayed at two castles on the Rhine and enjoyed both very much. Schlosshotel auf Burg Rheinfels at St. Goar (tel. 011 49 6741 8020) and Burghotel auf Schonburg at Oberwesel (tel. 011 49 6744 7027). Both of these are comfy and overlook the Rhine. There is even on outdoor privy in the castle wall!! Can't remember which castle has this "optional convenience".

Cheers,
