Skype To Go
Can anyone enlighten me on this? I currently have Skype and usually make calls back to the US via my laptop when traveling in Europe, however this time I'd like to use my cell. For some reason when I read the Skype To Go info it just isn't sinking in :( I have a World Phone with AT&T and while I can call home when out of the country it comes at a premium price. I don't want to buy a new phone so trying to figure out how to use this.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide, I appreciate your taking the time to help me understand. Susan |
I think if you are using Skype you are using WiFi on your phone rather than the phone service. My daughter was able to Skype me from Korea with her iPod Touch.

Skype can use underlining internet connections. Most smartphones have these options:
1. mobile data: very expensive overseas as you noted 2. WiFi: at your hotel, etc. The WiFi usability is not automatic. In order for an acceptable connection, you need: 1. Fast enough WiFi. This all depends on the provider (hotel, etc). If you are sharing one 802.11b connected to a DSL with 2 dozen other people in a hotel lobby doing video downloads, the internet itself is not usable. 2. Fast enough phone. Your processor must be fast enough to run the Skype ap without unbearable delay. To check this out, test out Skype at home on WiFi whose speed you know is fast enough. If it has too much delay, your phone is too slow to handle Skype anywhere. |
Or get your phone unlocked and pick up a SIM in Europe. Call ATT... if they won't do it look on Kijiji or craigslist. I've had iPhones unlocked where I live for 20 bucks.

I think you can call ATT and have your data services blocked when there is roaming. This was posted here somewhere. I have done it with my Spanish BBY while here in the US. On my phone it is just a click on my options/wifi set up..

Thanks to all, just having a real "blond moment" with this, probably will just look for an unlocked phone and take the advice above.
Appreciate it, Susan |
I Skype from my iphone in Europe and as stated above, you need to be in a place with decent wifi. It is very reasonable and there are many places in German cities with free wifi. You can go in and buy a coffee and make some calls.
I loaded it on my ipad for our trip to Germany on Friday. |
Skype has mobile app that runs on both Android & IPhone. I tested it on my Android phone while connected on the same home WIFI network. Call quality was much worse on Android than on the PC. I also tried it on the same Android phone connected on the 3G network and the call quality was bad (worse than WIFI).
