Skye to Dunkeld?
 

Leaving on Saturday for two weeks in Scotland and have my itinerary pretty well in mind. But I'm worried about one aspect: in the second week of the trip, I'm envisioning driving from Broadford (south central Skye) to Dunkeld. According to the atlas, that looks like about 175 miles. If any of you have done it, how long does it take? I'm not planning to do anything that day but get from one base (Skye) to another (Perthshire), but given the short days and the fact that I'll only have been driving on the left side for about five days of my life, is that just too ambitious?<BR><BR>If so, or if the weather turns dicey, where should I look to break the trip? (No luxury hotels needed; I'm B&amp;Bing it all the way.)<BR><BR>Thanks for your guidance.

Can't give you a usable estimate because we don't know what the weather will be on the day. But the drive is certainly reasonable. There are a couple of routes you could take but I would probably go A87 &gt; A82 through Ft William to Cranlarich &gt; A85 to Crieff and up to Dunkeld - but only because this route is farther south. You could just as easily take the A86 to the A9 and south to Dunkeld.<BR><BR>Just get an early start and take your time. With a couple of stretch breaks it should only take you 4+ - 5+ hours. In fact you would have enough time to stop in Glen Coe if you take the southern route.

Chris,<BR>Broadford to Skye Bridge and on to Kyle of Lochalsh. Stay on A87 to Invermoriston(55mls), then bear left onto A82 and into Inverness(20mls). Take the A9 south to Pitlochry(82mls) and on to Dunkeld(8mls). Main road driving all the way!<BR><BR>Take care

Topping. I have stuff at home to add to this.

It will be wet and windy.<BR><BR>two routes:-Leave Skye by the bridge, and, stopping at Plockton, for the view, drive up Loch Ness to Inverness and drive down the A9 to Dunkeld. That's about 3 hours driving if you're ina hurry. Take a full day and it will be no hardship.<BR><BR>As an alternative go down through Sleat, to Armadale and the ferry to Mallaig, then drive east to Fort William and south to Ballachulish, east htrough Glen Coe and on to Crianlarich, off the road at Lix to killin. The drive down Loch Tay side and along the river from Kenmore to Dunkeld. That's about 4 hours driving and, IMHO, a much prettier road.<BR>
