I will add that if anyone is trying to use miles to fly to Europe in this time - there seem to be even less seats than usual available(not just my observation but the friendly rep's at delta and continental as well!)

In order to use FF miles, you needed to call at midnite about 330 days in advance to obtain FF tix to Athens (from JFK, for ex). I ended-up "burning the midnite oil" for several nites in early-mid Sept until I got 3 free flites.

Can't comment as how the Olypmics might affect travel, but certainly you can expect crowds, especially in Athens. I certainly think I'd prefer Spring. We were in Greece several years ago, three weeks with Grand Circle incl. a week each in Athens, Heraklion. Rhodes City with day trips. This means no time "wasted" on cruise ships except for one day we did out of Pireaus.
I'd agree with those recommending museums such as in Heraklion and Athens if you are interested in classical history...and why travel to Greece if you aren't (ok, I know there are sun bathers and such). Also sites like Mycenae and Delphi and Knossis and Rhodes.
Oh yes, it was on a crowded Athens bus that we both "lost" our wallets!
Good luck...Bill
