Skiing trip to Zell am See

We are considering going to Europe to ski for a week in February - flying to Munich and renting a car.

We will be a group of 3 or 4 families. The adults are all intermediate to excellent skiers and we will have kids in our group from 6 to 12 yrs old who have all skied for a few years now.

Zell am See was recommended as a good place for a family skiing week. Any other suggestions within 2-3 hours of Munich? Any specific hotels that are recommended? We would like a pleasant town with good atmosphere, easy access to lifts and slopes and a hotel that would have some activities for kids as well.

President's Day week (Feb. 20-27) - I did some research and I believe that is after the European break.

There are too many to name.

St. Anton, Lech, Mayrhofen, Flachau, etc. This is serious skiing area and much of it is great for families and intermediate skiers.

HAve fun!

Hi (and hello SloJan!)

that week is still high season.

For snow reliability I would suggest you go to a place at higher elevation. I can think of better places than Zell am See. I agree with Jan on St. Anton and Lech. I did not like Mayrhofen and Flachau very much, and both are at relatively low elevation, possibly not snow on the ground (but in the skiing areas).

Well known for family vacations are Serfaus/Fiss/Ladis. Fiss is very charming IMO. Most hotels are very close to the lifts and slopes.

(not sure about English version, but you can try www.tiscover.at and do a search for Fiss)

By the way, IMO a car is nonsense. Once in your hotel you won't need the car.

Hi Ingo...when are you going to come my way???

I like cars. They give more freedom and when you are traveling with family members, that can be crucial. Some may not want to ski every day...jsut explore!

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with Jan on the car - I'd rather have it for the freedom and ease of getting all of our gear from Munich to the resort (we are planning on taking our skis - is that a mistake?).

And by the way, I just got our plane tickets - $415 round trip JFK to Munich which is probably not the best deal of the century but a decent price in any event.

Another issue is that one of the families in the group is on a limited budget so we would like to find a resort that is reasonable in price. I've heard that Lech and Zurs are very expensive, and Zell is a better value.
