Skiing/Sledding near Vienna and/or Munich
Our family will be spending a week in Vienna and a week in Munich over Xmas/New Years, and as our kids (7&9) have never seen snow, we'd like to get to somewhere that they can either ski or go sledding, but just for a daytrip from either Vienna or Munich... Any suggestions???

Hi Dave, Check out Garmisch in Germany. It is a short train ride from Munich and has excellent skiing. Good luck and have fun. I am jealous. Let us know where you go and how it was.

From Vienna, I would go to Simmering. It's beginner friendly and there are enough slopes to ride a different one all day long. It usually takes us about an hour and 20 minutes from Vienna, depending on the time of day and traffic.

Used to live in Munich, now in Vienna. Simmering for Vienna as agreed but for quicker day trip could go into the Vienna Woods for smaller hills. But warning there was very little snow last year and none so far this year. Munich has more choice - drive southwards and just grab a hill. I went to Lenggries last year with 3 kids around your kids age- much closer than Garmisch and mainly locals. Certainly not the facilities of Garmisch but you may not want the much busier road or crowds. Garmisch is BUSY on weekends, Lenggries was really easy.

Do these locations rent the equipment to you? which would be best to go to with absolutely no equipment...i.e. skiis, sski-boots, sleds, etc.

I think that I would prefer to go sledding from Munich, can you recommend a place?
