Skiing over Christmas
Looking to do a ski trip in Europe over Christmas. Does anyone know what the snow is like there during that time? Any suggestions on mountains. I've had a recommendation on Grindelwald. Does anyone know that resort? Anything you can add would be helpful.

Remember when planning that this is one of the busiest times for ski resorts.
Schools and some business closed for the holidays. High prices and often better hotels only accept reservations for extended periods. Higher altitude ski resorts have the better chance of excelent snow. Austria for example look to places like - Lech/Zurs , St. Anton , Ischgl, Sölden/ Obergurgl these with proven good snow records - fine sking networks - various gateway cities for transport like Munich, Zurich, Innsbruck. |
Grindelwald - really the Jungfrau Ski Region, which can be accessed from other towns as well - is a wonderful place, but because of its elevation it's not very snow-sure early in the season. I've skied there several times and enjoyed it very much but I personally would not take a chance on good snow over Christmas. As molker said, stick with the higher altitude resorts such as those listed above (Ischgl is my personal favorite of the dozen or so different areas in the Alps that I'm familiar with). Another one to add to the list would be Cervinia, on the Italian side of Zermatt and the Matterhorn (Il Cervino), which is a bit less expensive and also provides access to the Zermatt slopes via a combined ski pass.

It's been ages but we enjoyed the Grindelwald ski area. Please note, as others have already mentioned, that decent skiing snow at Christmas is often a bit iffy. The higher you go the better your chances for good conditions.

We can't see Whistler from our house, but we can see Mt. Baker. The clouds cleared today and the mountain has a LOT of snow. There is already a 70 inch base at Pan Dome. We can also see the lights of Grouse Mountain Ski Resort behind Vancouver from our window, and it is white, white, white!
