Skiing in Carinthia?
 

My DH and I have booked a room in Velden in Carinthia, primarily because we thought the hotel looked so luxurious. We're hoping to get in some skiing from there, and their website does mention it. Is there good enough skiing in the area for a couple of days worth for 2 intermediate skiiers? (DH likes black diamond, but he's on the easy end of black diamond. I'm definitely intermediate.) I know that I should have looked more into this before booking the hotel, but most hotels in the "main" ski areas that were in the luxury category we wanted were either totally booked, only accepting 2 week reservations or $1,000 a night. Will we be able to get in some good skiing? We don't mind driving 20 minutes or so if need be.

Skiing questions usually don't get many responses here on Fodors. Try another website. I'm pretty sure there is a ski Europe site that will have more information. I just don't recall the exact address.

From being somewhat familiar with the area, I'd say it would be more than a 20 minute drive to skiing, but there are certainly mountains all around. Why not call the hotel and ask?

This hotel is pretty far from the next skiing area. Your closest option is Gerlitzenalpe (about 15 minutes driving, then gondola up), but it is not a big area and it is rather for beginners to intermediates.

All the other skiing areas are about an hour away. Bad Kleinkirchheim (would probably fit your criteria, have skied there myself and liked it), Spittal/Goldeck is also quite small, but Hermagor/Nassfeld is huge and worth to go to.

Be prepared that the snow won't be that good anymore at these lower elevations in late winter/early spring. Not to speak of Velden, you'll have spring there in March.

Btw, I cannot imagine all the other luxury hotels charged $1,000 per night or were booked or only accepted 2 week reservations. We don't talk about Christmas/NYE here, do we?
